I wasn't going to spend much at this weeks club auction, but these caught my eye I wanted a 8Reales, so when this 1804 came up for a reasonable price I purchased it over a bidder. The a 1 Scudo Italia Venecia ( Venice) 1627 came up and no one bid on it, but my son had a special occasion coming up and he has admired older coins so I bought this to save for him. That was going to be the end of it, but then this 1881 $5 gold piece came up with a reserve close to the gold value and I estimated it to be a high EF or AU with the luster. I passed on it, along with the other members, but started to regret it. At the end, unpurchased coins had a last chance and before I knew it, my hand had raised. But I certainly don't regret it now, as very nice in hand, and looks mid-AU. So my main monthly buy. Just thought you might like to see them. Jim
Oh, man -- that 8 reales has been on my list for a long time. It's the only 1804 dollar I'm likely to ever own.
Thanks to all for the nice words. The Venice coin was the first I had seen, not being a world coin collector, and stood out along with the 1804 , and yes, the date was a determining factor. The only 1804 "$:, I will own also I am sure . The gold was just alluring! Jim
