Here is an uncommon type of error coin. A true Clipped Planchet most likely from the 1989 – 1994 era according to error-ref.com. I had a bit of reservation calling this a Saddle Strike Error when I first got it. Now after a bit of study I do believe this is a Head to Base type of Saddle Strike. https://www.error-ref.com/saddle-strike-head-to-base/ And it has a Strike Clip which is caused by the coin die shearing off part of the planchet against the collar die, and the reason for most of its assigned value. The small piece that gets sheared off and struck is called an Elliptical Strike Clip, and look somewhat like a football. https://www.error-ref.com/elliptical-strike-clips/ The lines on the face sides of this planchet are most likely roller line as they run parallel to each other on both sides. They may have become more pronounced with age, but I cannot show any evidence of that. Thanks for looking. Please post any Saddle Strike Coins or Strike Clipped Errors.
Your error with the missing chunk is called a "strike" clip. The die striking action sheared it off which is why the edge is gray. If it were clipped during the blanking stage, the edge would be plated. Cool find and also a saddle strike. Both as you already mentioned.
I like your Capped Die Saddle Strike, I'm sure they make for an interesting study. All that metal movement in a fraction of a second.
My other Saddle Struck Coin. I think it had a fight with the feeder fingers before it left the coin chamber area.
That’s a nice error. Maybe I’ll find one one day. You’re probably right on with those dates. Here’s my saddle strike and it has a date of 1994.
