Are there many penny collectors out there?

Here's my Massachusetts CENT from 1788.

I collect the '65 to date cents in Gem and concentrate on the zincolns.

Some of the modern cents are getting quite scarce in pristine condition and no one seems to notice. Sure there can be millions of a date saved but most of these have been poorly stored or were so unstable when they were released the coins are spotted or even rotted today. Even coins that are taken for granted like a nice attractive BU 1968 is very tough without carbon spots. The '84 issue was virtually rare i n pristine condition with nice smooth surfaces in 1984 and by now there may be none left. I have a couple but last I looked they had tiny little carbon spots. By now they might be zinc oxide.

Not all the modern cents were saved in huge numbers. Some of the very lightly saved coins (like the '71-S) have tarnished as well and even the mint set coins tend to be bad.

If collectors ever start paying attention to these and other moderns they will find some major scarcities. Modern aren't cheap because they are common but rather because there is so little demand. Try finding low denomination Soviet coins! These have large mintages and very low survival, even lower than the '68 cent but some have very high prices despite weak demand. The same things applies to Chinese coins and is starting on Indian coins. With the sky rocketing price of US mint sets it shouldn't be long until collectors notice that some of these coins are going to be quite scarce. And many are going to be tough in Gem because many dates just weren't made very nice.

 

Yes but I may have started first (1972) so maybe you were just following my lead.

Only had a 25 cent allowance. Couldn't do much with shields or V nickels with that. You work with what you've got. V nickels were my second collection.

If you roll search it is still possible to get most of the set all the way to 1938 from circulation. Can't do that with any other series. The only pieces I've never found from pocket change are the 50 D, the 2003 P & D and the 2009 P & D.

 

I probably started in '73 or '74...so ya got me there!

 

I have searched hundreds of nickel rolls and have not even found an Indian much less a V nickel.

Wrong type of roll. Last year or maybe it was in 2020 I actually found a British Large penny (I think it was 1920) in VF condition in a roll of half-dollars.

I'd be curious to know the slab grade of your 1866 Indian. I too like copper {bronze} and am always trying to improve my grading skills of these items.

It is just something about pennies. I go through other types of coins going through my dad’s coins. Some of these I found the last few days. I don’t post because some are not into pennies so I look for threads that do.

Lincoln Cents!
Goal,
To complete the series from 1909 through current (and keep current each year, my 2022's came today)
I go by date range and mint mark, I fill the holes with the best I've got, even if that means POOR!
In the early 80's my Lincoln collection contained a fair amount of metal detecting finds (all of those have been upgraded now).
Just plug holes, work towards completing the series.
The bucket list coins came LAST! 09SVDB, that was the last actual hole to fill, that inspired me to get a 55DDO, that inspired me to started working backwards on adding all the proofs (well back to 1936 anyway, I'm at 1940 now).
The inspiration boosters creates motivation to start at the lowest grade cents in the collection and do upgrades, I'm nearing the bottom range of Fine now.
This is why many people have worked 30 plus years on a NEAR complete series.
I'm not big on error coins, but the 55DDO is was a legendary childhood bucket list coin, and the time came when I could swing getting one.
The complete Lincoln series will be just under 400 coins (with the proofs).

 

I pretty much just collect just 1972 cents I don't find the need to collect every wheat cent I find. If its a D or S I will cuz I probably need them for my book. If their really shiny I'll hold on and check if grand babies need.
