Forgive me first off if this is a dumb question I am rather new to the coin collecting game. I recently found a 1974 one cent and it is in great shape and bears a "S" mint mark on it. Since I have not seen this very often on coins I did some looking into it to see where it was minted. What I found was that they were from San Fransico and not many were minted compaired to other coins. Is this valid information? If so or even if it isnt is this coin something worth holding on to? Is it more valuable that standard one cents? Or is it just another coin not worth keeping? Any input appreciated Thank you!

It depends on the year of the coin as to the rarity compared to other mint marks. Some years the "D" mint marks are more valuable. Example 1914-D and 1924-D. As to if you should keep it or not, Do you enjoy the coin? If so then keep it.

The mintages for 1974 are as follows
    1974 -Slightly over 4 Billion
    1974-D Slightly over 4 Billion
    1974-S around 400 Million
Does this make the 74 S more valuable. No
This is because many people saved the 1974 S because it was to be the last circulated S mintmark for cents.
Same thing happend with the 1931-S at 866000. Everyone saved it also and many exist in great condition. The value is not there though

Wow thank you! That was very helpful and descriptive! I enjoy it I think Im going to hang on to it :) its at least a little more difficult to come across then the others of that year so I think its a neat find. Found it in a roll at work and figured I better keep it since I couldnt remember ever finding and "S" mint marked coins. Is there any in paticular with that mint mark that are worth alot that I should watch for?
