What a beautiful coin! The toning is quite nice, especially the reverse. I'd be afraid to crack because it's always a gamble and I'm a worrier, so I'd leave as is. I'm saving up for a matte Lincoln myself, just haven't found that right one yet in my budget.
Go for the green bean. You could also submit it to PCGS for crossover, specifying that it must grade at least the same, or higher. That way you don't risk a 63 with a crack out.
It's worth a shot but I expect that CAC will not sticker that. They dont like the blue/purple toning on copper Cross over would be the best bet to increase the value
According to CAC guidelines, they will only accept Lincolns 1909-1942 Proofs and 1909-1958 Mint State. (according to letter from CAC dated 3/2/21)
RETRACT RETRACT. I looked at the grade and my eyeballs played a trick thinking it was a 1964. Aplolgies. Phil
I guess if you are looking to increase the value so you can sell it, paying the fee to have it "reconsidered" specifying it must grade higher or left as is, and/or submitting it to CAC and see if it got a + would be worth it.
Is that a MikesMountainValues special? The toning looks similar to everything he cleans/dips and resells. I don't know how he got NGC in cahoots with him, but the seller is known for buying details coins cheaply, dipping and cleaning them up, letting them tone and then selling at premiums. I sold him an Indian Head Cent that was borderline UNC BN and somehow 5 weeks later, the same coin is radically toned and in an MS65BN holder with really flashy luster. There are more detailed stories about him in other forums. I have to assume that everything he sells is altered in some way shape or form. Your coin, your risk on a crackout, but I leave it alone if its me.
CAC does not consider the + designation, or absence thereof, when evaluating the piece for Green or Gold, and does not "award" same.
I would send it for CAC review. if it gets a "green bean" sticker, then they think it's right for the grade given or even exceptional for that grade, if they give it a "gold bean", then likely it would be worth sending for reconsideration for the grade higher, but I wouldn't crack it out. I would resubmit it at that point in slab, with the gold bean sticker on it, and see if it gets the bump to PF65, or they choose to leave it at PF64, do not allow them to crack out and grade lower, even if you pay for nothing, you still hold your coin at PF64 value, in which case it's still a PF64 with a gold bean sticker that would likely sell for higher than PF64 money, maybe even PF65 money. if you resubmit, I would suggest not cracking it out, at least then you won't wind up with a lower grade than starting. But if in your position, I would send to CAC first as cheapest thing you could do to increase it's sale price or value and see how that goes.
ALso I want to add, this looks like "color tweak" pictures from eaby or something where they amp up the toning to sell it, but it doesn't actually look that colorful to the eye. At least I hope that is the case. it's pretty but these pictures seem too "over the top" on color.
I was not aware that NGC or PCGS would reconsider a piece, when it has a visible CAC designation. That would be NEWS to many collectors, I think, and there would be a traffic increase to the Post Office. It is definitely News to me. PCGS and CAC have a designation interface, do they not?
I’m not selling I like the coin. I buy coins to have for 30+ years. I have had no intention of selling. I post on the board and see what people think of the grade to make sure I’m not picking lemons. It was only because everybody posted 65 or 66 grade estimates that I decided to see What would happen if I asked the question the other way around showing the grade and asking about crack out. I find it extremely interesting that everybody went too high grading the gtg and now everyone is concerned about a crack out dropping a point. Ultimately I’m happy with a coin and that’s all it really mattered but it’s always nice to be able to call 30 other people and have them look at your coin and tell you what they think
nice coin, i think the oldest proof i have is a 39 jefferson, really want to get a nice old one someday
I'm not concerned with a crack out dropping it a point. I'm concerned a crack out will come back Questionable Color and get a details grade instead. Personally I think it's probably going to 64, maybe 65. But the color.... I would not remove it from that slab it could be devastating if the graders decide they don't like the color and refuse to straight grade it again.
