I've got some ancients stored in white paper envelopes. Do you think there would be any problems writing on the envelopes in pencil or pen? Which would be better? I just don't want anything to affect the coins negatively.

    Thanks!

    Hello,
If it was me I would put them in 2X2 or plastic in the envelope and then I would say a pencil would be the best.

    I agree - go with a 2x2...

Hi there. Thanks for your feedback.

2x2's would be okay. However, out of a few ancient coin collectors that I know, including one prominent dealer who I have bought my coins from, they say that paper envelopes are the best for long term storage. Also, there's just something about those ancient collectors...They like to touch everything. ;)

So, I'm thinking that pencil would be okay, I just don't want it to impart anything to the coin.

The paper envelopes will cause the coins to tone - but then so will the cardboard 2x2's, just not quite as much or as soon. So if you're OK with that - either one works ;)

I don't like 2x2s at all (too much humidy and the plastic film makes them sweat) , so i'd go for the paper if i had to chose between the two.

Failing that i'd advise you to buy a coin tray (which seems to be standard practice of storing ancients and hammered coins round these parts), i know a dealer that sells them if you require one.
