I just finished searching a $100 face value bag of junk silver. Found a few hole fillers but also found this. Every once in awhile I find some really good pieces in my junk silver. I bought this particular lot 6 years ago. I think it’s the first lot that there wasn’t a single Mercury Dime in it. But I did find this. A nice looking toned Washington Quarter. Then I flipped it over. George’s profile was black, like a reverse proof coin. I tilted it in the light and saw this. You can see the toning and the blackness this would cause in the light of on the correct angle. The last photo clearly shows the damage. Very tiny, shallow holes have been drilled everywhere. Back in the junk silver bag it went. At least I found a few holes in folders that I build from junk silver coins. I only need one common date Roosevelt Dime to finish that book. More junk silver searching coming up in the near future. At least I have some.
Makes you wonder who the hell would drill tiny holes into a silver quarter? That's bizarre, must be a meth user or something else!
@Collecting Nut Are you sure those are holes and not pitting? It looks somewhat like metal that's been hit by arcs from a Tesla coil or something.
Tesla coil CN, try Mac Truck, just kidding. The obverse does look pitted or worse. It's still silver, thanks for posting it.
In hand you can see tiny holes. To me they look drilled. They all look like larger holes that were drilled but they are tiny. I do have some very small drill bits in my tool box but taking a photo of them is out of the question.

Most dealers have them. Some dealers will count out in front of you. The place I buy from sells junk silver in bags of $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, $25.00 and $100.00 face value. Over the years I have close to $2500.00 face value. I bought them years ago and that’s why I have good coins from them. You can’t get what I’m finding in junk coins today.
Over the last 3 months I have purchased several collections from persons who have had a family member pass away and they find the coins when going through their belongings. On Saturday I spent 3+ hours going through a collection of coins the lady's grandfather had left to her father who recently passed away. I was notified by afriend that I had previously purchased coins from and she gave Edith my name. I ended up buying the lot of coins from her and it ended up with $383.00 in 90% silver and several .999 silver commems and 12 Silver eagles. The price was negotiated and agreed upon. Nothing really impressive mostly "junk silver". I advertise in Senior Centers and other organizations (where permissable) and it has paid off. Ya Just Havta Look! Semper Fi
If I had just seen the photos, I'd say that quarter obverse had been coated in something and it was coming off. I can't see any "drill" holes in the photos.
