i know this isnt a coin but i dont really know where else to ask. its been sitting around since i bought it 10+ years ago. its a brass plate that reads 1975 IMPERIAL (a car). its 7 7/8" by 8 1/8" by 1/4". any insight as to what this is would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.
To me, this looks to be an'embossing plate' for embossing this design into paper, such as one that may have been used on the cover of the 1975 Imperial Owners Manual (which it doesn't appear to be) or other collateral print material used as a Point of Sale (in dealerships) sales aid (or brochure). Perhaps this embossed the design into a paper wrapper for the original sales catalog used in dealerships. Have to keep checking eBay autos and such sources for vintage peripheral materials.
Being that the design is reversed it has to be for imprinting on another material for the image/design to be read correctly, such as embossed paper. The plate appears to be copper with a patina. Copper plates commonly used in printing procedures such as plates mounted to type high letter press printing blocks, like those old wood and lead type letters you still see from time to time in antique shops or used decoratively now that the art form of typesetting is done primarily in digital press. 1 2 3 4 5
thanks. i didnt think it might of been for paper but comparing it to those other plates changed my mind. i got it at a flee market where they had half a dozen other such plates and i dont remember if i payed $10 or 20 but i liked the design. guess what...........................i think i just found it http://imperialclub.com/Yr/1975/Brochure/CoverBig.jpg if someone wants to remove this thread i guess i solved my own question.
Very cool that you found that! Have you tried to write to them? Maybe something someone there would be willing to buy from you at a premium... if it's something you are looking to sell someday.
i really havent talked to anyone about it. i might eventually sell it to fund my large cent/ect collection tho it is a unique piece which ive had quite a while. might be more sellable if i could find the matching brochure. a second website says the brochure is 11 by 11 so that looks like it.
