Problem Peace Dollar

Good evening, have a peace dollar that has a spot that has white haze look to it on the reverse. Any thoughts of what it might be?

It looks to me like something corrosive got spilled on it, and etched it.

 

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.

 

Looks like the “milk spots” that are common on Peace dollars of this period

 

Nothing I know of can fix that as it’s damaged from a spill of something.

 

The way the letters are kind of dissolved makes me wonder if someone did an acid test on it.

 

Still a beautiful coin.

 

I think the letter appearance is just because of the lighting and texture, but I'll bet that's exactly what happened. Now that you mention it, I've seen other silver coins where someone cluelessly did that, and yes, that's exactly what it looked like.

 

I agree with the others assessment too. It's really a shame because other than that, the coin is beautiful.

You can give it a little direct sunlight on a windowsill which will work on darkening it, some, but if you do that, be careful and keep checking it, at least every hour, as the effects are pretty much irreversible. Outside of that you're pretty much stuck with it the way it is. Any personally, FWIW, I think it's still a nice-looking coin.
