Yea, the Fedex agent who was explaining this to me was clear as mud about what the fees are for.

Either way, expect an additional charge importing anything over $2K!

Naumann will not send your coins via Austrian post. I argued with them about this to no avail. All DHL express shipments are dinged in Canada/ 13 percent HST/ + handling charges:yack: Rauch on the otherhand/ also from Vienna sends "no value" priority Austrian Post. Only three Auction houses send only via DHL/UPS/FEDEX=paying extra 13%. So, I will not bid at their auctions/ unless its a super steal....

Ironically I have never had a problem receiving packages via DHL and the only problem I have had was with FedEx. For a brief time they were handing all packages with ancient coins to customs and telling them to look a them... So one consignment got snagged and it was a long process to prove that everything was on the up and up. Even after we won our "appeal" we were forced to pay a fee to get the package.

The other issue I have with FedEx is when I ship I am quoted one price but when they bill me it is almost ALWAYS higher. So I try to stick to USPS...

My Roma shipment, by Royal Mail/USPS, is temporarily "off the radar". It's been over a week since the last tracking update, which is not terribly unusual. I suspect that it will arrive in another week or two.

I must say that the vagaries of shipping coins, given the pandemic, transport issues, climate problems, staffing at the points of transit, rising costs, and international developments, to name what's come to my mind, just adds more uncertainty to getting anything from point A to point B. These are the times we live in.

The pandemic has definitely made things worse, but the biggest woes started when DeJoy tried his hardest to dismantle the USPS.

I have had SO many problems with the USPS over the past three or so years. I have gotten packages back many months later, packages have ended up going to the wrong country, tracking stopping once the package reaches the sort facility (apparently they no longer provide tracking once it leaves the US?), etc.

Our insurance company made changes to our international shipping insurance. They lowered coverage and added additional requirements.

It looks as if DeJoy is still going at it.

Yes, tracking does not continue for some countries, unless they have an agreement with the USPS to track shipments.

There's a proposal to close some post office locations. That's really bad news, especially for folks living in rural areas.

    Ah, DHL…..
Won a Vespasian aureus recently. I usually have my deliveries sent to my business, because I’m never home and the require signatures. Imagine my surprise when I got the message they couldn’t deliver because no one was there to sign….at 6:15 pm….ON CHRISTMAS EVE!

As a sideline and not related to DHL......
Just wanted to let people know what's happening over here in Spain with the standard postal service!
I started to notice that any declared package coming into Spain from outside of the EU was having an import tax imposed !.....This seems to have started around 3 months ago...When you pick up the package from the post office the import tax has to be paid in cash!....You cannot use your card and you have to give a gmail address to have the receipt sent to......
I bought a coin from the UK (LAC) a $35 coin, when it arrived I had to pay $13 IMPORT TAX!.....A couple of coins from Jazz auctions on CT, as John always declares I got stung $9 for each packet! (My fault as I decided to declare the contents)....Coins coming in from India $8 tax each!....There is only one person who I buy from now outside of the EU, who's in the U.S, as he sends them as a certified letter and there's no problem!.....I've yet to see what happens when I buy from an auction house?....Quite frustrating really as it does limit the choice!...And now IF there's a coin that I really want from outside of the EU I have to take this import tax into account and hopefully have a good enough relationship with the seller where we can come to some sort of compromise ....Since the settling down of Brexit (NOT!)...I will not buy from the UK now......Trying to find out the percentage of import tax imposed on declared items is difficult to say in the least but it seems to be around 28-40%!.....Scary!

There should be a "sad" button or a "cares" button, as on Facebook, so you don't think that liking your comment means I'm enjoying your predicament. But if we had that, we'd get even more grief for not being a truly serious numismatic forum.

You can oblige the seller to send the coin in registered letter format/ no description/ no value/ just as a precaution cover the cardboard packet which holds the coin/s with aluminum foil....works everytime:)

.....Yep that would be cool, or even a "I hear you" button!.....For example I recently bought this...Cost me 5 bucks!.....Plus $4 postage....My Import tax was $8! That's about 90% of total cost.......Ok nothing special to most people but it's quite rare as there is no eye!....Not many around and come up for sale rarely.....So I obviously paid it...But??

I think I need to re-photograph a couple of them (denarii of Trajan and Hadrian) for which Roma's photos appear to be in black-and-white. But here are the other two, which appear to have at least a hint of color! The first one is accompanied by Roma's write-up (because I haven't had a chance to write my own yet), and the second has mine.

    L. Memmius AR Denarius. Rome, 109-108 BC. Obv. Male head to right (Apollo?), wearing oak wreath; XVI monogram (mark of value) below / Rev. The Dioscuri
standing facing before their horses, each holding a spear; L•MEMMI in exergue. Crawford 304/1; BMCRR Italy 643; RSC Memmia 1. 3.95g, 19mm,

Trajan AR Drachm, AD 98/99, Koinon of Lycia. Obv. Laureate head of Trajan right, ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙϹ ΝΕΡ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ ΓƐΡΜ / Rev. PS: Cataract surgery No. 2 is tomorrow, so I'll probably be out of pocket for a while again. Fingers crossed that it's as successful as the first one appears to be, now that it's significantly healed after two weeks.
