Hi I had to get a new laptop because my old one died suddenly with only having it for 6 months and even sending it away to get fixed but decided to go through some nice pennies I had sitting next to my computer desk and could this 1968 penny be a double die in Liberty or an off center strike since some of the letters are numbers are very close, thank you to who might.
No not a Doubled die nor an off center strike. Probably deterioration doubling which has nothing to do with a true Doubled die variety. Just an old Cent with circulation issues.
this is why the Lincolns observe was changed in 1969 - i heard the master hub die was getting a mushy look after a long time like in the 68's so they made a completely new one for 69
The reason the letters are so close to the edge is just as @Snowman stated. I believe the Master Die used to hub 1968 Cents was manufactured in 1916.
Ok thank you everyone who committed been a coin collector since I was little but just not good with errors.
That's what I read. You can really see the difference between the 1968's and the 1969's as far as lettering distance from the edge. Then the Mint ruined the Lincoln's by making them Zincoln's in 1982.
