I found this searching BU rolls from the bank. It at first appeared to be a gouge in the coin that pierced through to the zinc on one side. Then I saw that the zinc was molded to the hairlines and the letter G. I ran a toothpick over the section that is flat and plain and it is smooth, except a very slight indent at the edges where the zinc and copper meet. Where the zinc ends and the gouge is only in copper, the depth on the copper side is greater. I have tried to make sense of this and am at a loss. If anyone could please explain how this happened, I would be so grateful. ct1.jpg ct2.jpg ct3.jpg ct4.jpg ct5.jpg

Oh wow this is defiantly a strike thru almost looks like a hug rim burr to me. What’s going on at 6-8oclock on the obverse rim bc it doesn’t look fully complete. Could just be the picture. That’s interesting. Def a strike thru but interesting also cause the zinc is showing as well.

That's really odd, put it in a flip.
I am gonna say that, that area is raised, and from the gouge in Lincolns forehead. The burr stood on edge while getting it's copper plating. It then folded over and was struck into the surface of the coin.

I think it is a form of a planchet defect or damage.
There is zero reason we should be seeing bare zinc unless there is split plating.

    Interesting

I agree could be a defective planchet as well once it was struck thru. I’ve got a few defective planchets that show the zinc and no copper plating.

I wondered about a strike through of some sort, but couldn't figure out how the zinc flowed out in only part, and how the copper only part of the gouge didn't get pressed out. Unless that part of what was struck through fell out after minting, whereas prior to on the zinc side. Boy do I have a lot more to learn!

Looks like something was laying on the planchet when it was copper coated.

Very interesting for a zincoln, It's a keeper. Seal it, keep it, and show it. Thanks for sharing, good luck.

Is this similar? A strike thru? Reverse possible strike thru.jpg

If you’re referring to the eagles breast, no. The eagle has been cut on the breast. There’s metal on either side of the cut.

May I ask where I should send this to get a professional determination on this coin? I cannot make heads nor tails when I try to compare coin sites to achieve what I need at the lowest cost. Your experience would be invaluable to me. Thank You!

What do you mean “achieve what I (you) mess at the lower cost”
We know it’s a strike thru. Of what who knows maybe scrap metal most likely. And then once the strike thru occurred it caused some of the cooper plating to be removed and leave the rest. cool strike thru u can add to ur collection.

Truth is, I also posed the original question on the coin on another site and was told it was damage. When I asked further about the clear impressions of hair and letter G, I received a not so courteous response and was told to send it in. Folks here are much more friendly and willing to help others learn. Thank you for your time and help.

@Collecting Nut might have this one a chunk of debris in the way. During plating. Although striking pressure has the ability to cover planchet roughness.

@Kaye I don’t think it’s worth sending to a TPG, paying the fees, mailing and insurance. Just protect it. If you have a LCS, you can take it there for an opinion but it’s definitely one to keep for yourself. Glad to hear you’ve gotten the interest of your grandson. Enjoy your time with him and coins.
