I know this is a long shot, but.....I'm in the market for some OWB rolls of Morgans....anybody seen any lately?
No such thing that I've ever seen. Coins were not rolled by banks in that era. I have seen early rolls of wrapped Morgans, but this was done decades after being minted.
That's a really good question. I don't know how the coins were shipped originally. I know they were stored by the millioins in canvas bags, so I suppose it's possible those were the original containers. Finding such a thing today, though, would probably be kind of tough. I've never seen an original bag of Morgans, but I imagine they could exist. Why does the original packaging matter to you?
Banks did not roll coins until the early to mid 1930's Banks did not roll coins until the early to mid 1930's - Morgan dollars, (because nobody wanted them, never did in the first place) sat in bags and in the wet, damp corners of vaults. They actually scopped them up with shovels to load them. Nobody, I mean nobody ever had a use for them much up to the 1960's. Then bags were cut open and dumped out to distribute or sell, and still not many wanted the things. You would not be able to lift a bag or carry it far. There are some, very few, 20 coin tubes that may be some sort of original intact but they would be the common dates and likley picked over times 12 by now. The entire Morgan and Peace dollar programs were nothing more than a bale out for silver mine owners and investors and to stockpile for the Treasury. No one could afford to carry around any dollar coins until after the first World War and then nobody wanted them. """For almost 75 years Morgan dollars were a coin looking for a purpose"""!
