I don't own any, but I would like to own a "School Girl" dollar pattern. I also like the "Goloid" dollar patterns.
The top one is a copper planchette for a goloid pattern. The bottom one is made of goloid. I have a real thing for Goloid
Very interesting subject for a thread. I knew nothing about them but am reading up now. For those who also are in the dark, this is how Wiki describes them. A pattern coin is a coin which has not been approved for release, but produced to evaluate a proposed coin design. They are often off-metal strike, to proof standard or piedforts. Many coin collectors collect and study pattern coins because of their historical importance. Wikipedia
Patterns fascinate me, but I don't own any, and I'm not sure I ever will. Well, actually, I do have some Carr products based on patterns. I'm very happy with them, but this probably isn't the thread to start that.
That obverse portrait of Liberty is utterly gorgeous. Much more attractive than the more androgynous versions that were adopted. But I can see how the high relief of the pattern would not have survived into actual industrial production.
