This peace dollar is a head scratcher. It looks to me that someone cleaned it on the obverse between a line that crosses the crown of her head and a line that crosses in God we trust. At first I thought it might have been dipped but ruled it out because there is a line on both ends and the reverse has no distinct line. The other thought was there was a piece of tape that had been previously placed on the coin. Has anyone seen this before and is there anything that can be done to make it look better?
Looks to me like there was tape or some kind of other something that blocked part of the coin from toning. And if it is natural patina I don't think there's a way. Short of a dip.
Thanks all for the comments. I think I'll go with the tape theory; maybe someone had a silver dollar album that they used tape to hold it in place. Regards, S60.
I agree with tape. A friend had me go through his mother's coins and she had a Whitman album and every silver dollar had a piece of tape across it to keep them from falling out.
End of roll toner or tape over roll end . This actually looks better in hand under proper lighting toned to and bottom obv. And rev. With a void between due to tape
Couple of days soak in acetone followed by either rolling a cotton swab over the area or gently wiping it, be careful not to scrub on it.
