I love the long-faced Licinius on the first one! I've only got one poor example of the "NN" type: But here's a nicer one of the following issue: There's actually an even earlier issue, unlisted, before the "NN HTA" one, with "NN" legend, SMHT mark, and officina in field. Here's a specimen that sold on eBay in 2011 (not my coin).
Very nice coins all!....The NN examples are certainly more difficult to acquire and are on my want list.... I've just finished a small subset, obtaining the five Oficinas of RIC VII#15 here they are....
I love how Licinius gets to have kissy lips on so many of these issues. Who do you think he's puckering up for?
@Archeocultura : nice variety of coin mint places. Thanks for sharing. @Heliodromus & Victor_Clark : Correct, these 2 are not among the first minted coins of this small series. In my youthful impetuosity I have overlooked that. Unfortunately, my more mature age comes to the fore, noticeable in small shortcomings. Thanks for the uploaded photos, the condition of the coins is very good to excellent. Here are 2 more " long faces" 1) mint HTr 2) mint HTr with nice hearstyle ( second is brighter in lighting ) @Spaniard : nice ensemble, and excellent quality. In my notes I see that you have 3 of the 4 bust varieties that I have noted. I don't know its name, but it has a ladder-like shape, going up from his left hand. With your delta coin this is not there, with the HTB the horizontal "steps" point lower on the left, higher on the right, with the HTgamma coin the "steps" are horizontal between the 2 "railings". There is a 4th variant where the steps on the left are higher than on the right. Thanks for sharing. the 4 variant's here: HTdelta without 'ladder' HTA with 'ladder' left down, right up HTdelta 'ladder' left up, right down MTHdelta 'ladder' with horizontal rungs @thejewk : not for me, i don't know him that well @Ryro : Thanks for sharing, this is another series.
This is my only campgate of Licinius I, and I love it because it was a Saturnalia gift from my Secret Saturn. Licinius I, AD 308-324. Roman billon follis, 2.71 g, 18.3 mm, 11 h. Heraclea, second officina, AD 317-18. Obv: IMP LICI-NIVS AVG, Laureate and draped bust right, holding globe, scepter and mappa. Rev: PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG, three-turreted gateway of military camp; Λ in right field; SMHB in exergue. Refs: RIC vii, p. 547, 48 var. (bust right); Cohen 145; RCV 15268.
@sky92880......Interesting!...I didn't know about these 4 variants so thanks!.. Just one question.. Are the 4 types present at all 5 Oficinas?.....The left up right down seems to be the rarer type?.......Paul
@Spaniard, I have determined these variants myself. To check the different ateliers I have to look at my collection, but I'll let you know. The variant in question is effectively less common. They also occur in the Caesars coinage. marc
I got this more ordinary Heraclea RIC 15 in 1998 because I liked the style which is quite different from most of this mint.
