... when a modern coin - round and uniform, looks very strange and off and the first thing in mind is "this must be a poor fake" True story.
You don't have a book or two in your throne room? These replaced another fun book Magic Fishing P... by Kim Dalfries. I made her web site with the pic below.
The first thing that comes to my mind when somebody mentions Nero is "I wish I had a sestertius of him".
I pronounce words with A the British way, so to me it's Ves-paa-sian. Like how Italians pronounce their Vespa Who knows how the Romans pronounced?!
29. Sneaking out of bed at 3 am to do live bidding on European auctions. 30. Checking CT "Ancient Coins" section 20 times a day.
Hah!!!! I tried to think of the worst possible pronunciation, and it still wasn't that bad!! I assumed it was Pup-een-us. But......Poopy Anus!
29. Watching an auction for more than 5 hours to bid on two coins that you overpay for and buying 7 more. Or is that normal?
30. Getting bored from ancient coins collecting, then deciding to quit, but only to go back collecting modern coins. By the way, I didn't get the meaning of year 336 ?
31.....When you check a coin in your cabinet 365 days of the year to see if it has toned slightly....
That's funny, I quit modern coins years ago and then came across ancients and have been hooked ever since. If you got 323, then 336 is just a pop away...
323 BCE - Death of Alexander the Great 336 BCE - Assassination of Philip II. Alexander the Great ascends to the throne. Personally, I feel 323 BCE is the more important date, since it literally had drastic consequences on three continents. The Macedonians were relatively prepared for Philip's death, as Alexander was able to take clear control (and he killed those who disagreed). However, they were completely unprepared for Alexander III's death, and they spent the next 50 years fighting over it. Which gives me another bullet point. 32. You know the word lagid and can use it in a sentence.
33: You always type "Victory", "Comes", "Genius" with capital letters even when in a normal sentence. Sometimes uses the letter "V" instead of "U"
@kirispupis . How about the date 333 ? It represents a new era with Alexander defeating the Persians at Issos. That's the beginning of a new page in History paving the way to the Greek reign over the world till the advent of the Romans. And most of all.. It's so easy to remember. Remember 333 for ever. Just free, for all.
The issue with 333 is that it was just one defeat of the Achaemenid Empire. Darius III was by no means vanquished and posed a very serious threat to Alexander at the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BCE. Also, not all cities in the West capitulated to Alexander after Issus. Tyre, which required a nine-month siege in 332, and Gaza, where Alexander was injured, were also serious challenges. Compare this to 323 BCE, where the area from Greece to Egypt to India were thrown into sudden turmoil because there was no clear successor.
