The time has come.... I simply have to make some space and I am thinking of selling (shudder) or trading out rolls of wheat cents. I am not going to search them.... What is fair for a roll of average wheat's? Maybe $2.00 a roll?
I'd be happy to get $2/roll. LCS sells them for anywhere from 0.05 to 0.10 cents a piece, so getting 0.04 a piece seems fairish. If you could sort out the 10's, 20's and 30's you could ask for maybe $5-$10 a roll.
Sorting is precisely what I won't be doing. My eyes can't see dates on cents anymore and I ain't gonna look at 800 cents with my loupe! Not enough bourbon in my cabinet for that!
It's been my experience with wheaties that they range from VF-XF as an average circulated condition for 50s and late 40s, F-VF for most 30s, and AG-G for many prior. I think $2.00 a roll for 50s and 40s is more than reasonable, and $3.00 a roll with a good amount of 30s in there. And even more if there are a good amount of 20s and teens. But, that would require you to widely sample what you have to better determine a price that is fair to you. You'll probably have a number of people that want them for "free" stating they can buy them all day long for $1 or less a roll. More power to them. But, that is certainly unreasonable from what I have seen in the market for bulk wheaties over the past few years. Depending on how many you actually have, you may want to sell them in bags of thousand(s) for a nominally better price if the mix is spread out well. Again, that would require you to actually widely sample what you have. Good luck!
I would imagine where you plan to sell them might be used as a guideline. If here, on CT, $2 is more than fair, IMHO. If you list them on eBay, I'd start high (like $5), and accept offers and see what you get.
I thought about doing this a while back.. rolled up over 40 rolls of wheaties... then couldn't bring myself to sell them lol
At $2 a roll you are getting all 40's and 50's with 1 or 2 common 30's salted in there. If you actually have a couple of decent chase dates in there as well as some old ones, then $3 is fair. The problem is shipping costs will make it not worth the buyer or sellers, time/money.
I would just schlep them down to the local dealer and see if they will give you 2-3 cents apiece. While you may be able to get more selling them to a collector, you'll have to deal with shipping costs and secure packaging, which can be a real pain in the you know what. Just my thoughts
My LCS sells them for $2.50 per roll. I sell them in my antique store for $2.00 per roll. Not worth your time to mess with. You know, your eyes, the amount you have and a lack of bourbon. Just roll them and take them to your LCS and trade for something you like. Besides, the bourbon would make all of them errors. Lol
@Randy Abercrombie I have mine sorted into 10's, 20's, S Mint and so on. I did that long ago before my eyes got bad. I have a bunch. But I use then to make sets for grandchildren. I would like to get rid of them but here we go having 2 more great grandchildren this year. If it were me, I would offer them up here first. Keep us posted.
