I am glad to see coins on the news or in TV shows and movies. I think it draws collectors to the hobby. The first "New" quarter is released. Maya Angelou was a California poet. I never heard of her before this quarter program. I don't see a lot of effort in the Washington portrait. It resembles the 1732 1932 George Washington Bicentennial" Brass Medal portrait only shortened some. Get used to it though, the program will go to 2025 with 5 different women issues per year. I think the second image below shows why business coins come directly from the mint with contact or "bag" marks.
Fixed, lol I think my fingers just typed Mary automatically, I was more concerned getting Angelou right.
The Washington obverse design has quite a history. You should read up on it. https://coinweek.com/coins/commemor...-and-future-commemorative-washington-quarter/ The design was executed by Laura Gardin Fraser (a woman) for the original design contest in 1932.
Someone has already found a couple of rolls in circulation it seems: https://www.reddit.com/r/CRH/comments/s198t8/found_2022_quarters_early_what_you_do_none_for/
I’m gonna check my bank. Let my teller know. Stopped in and gave her 2 scratch tickets and didn’t ask for any coins
The whole series is BS!! of this 1st issue only Dr Sally Ride is deserving of a coin.. I can think of dozens of other women that deserve this honor but Ms Ride is the only one in this 1st batch I agree with...
As far as I know, there will be 5 years of issue (25 total women). Perhaps those you think are worthwhile will be minted in subsequent years.
My grandmother, mother, daughter, granddaughter 1, and granddaughter 2. would have been my choice by far! Oh well next lifetime.
When I wrote: I wasn't knocking the design. I was implying that it was copied from elsewhere, that I knew I saw it before. That it being a change in design, not a lot of effort was put into that. It was already done for them. I did not know it was the work of Laura Gardin Fraser, wife of James Earle Fraser, designer of the Buffalo Nickel. I can now surely understand the idea of using a woman sculptors work such as hers for the obverse. So it is definitely fitting. It makes sense. She has sculpted designs for several of my very favorite commemorative half dollars and medals. The 1947 Philippine MacArthur 50 cent and Peso coins as well. I am glad for one thing. George Washington will still be on the obverse for at least a few more years.
IIRC, there will be 4 years 2022-2025 an interruption for 2026 (Semi-Quincentennial) and then the program will finish with the other 7 years. The interruption is what seems to be causing the confusion
I don’t think it’s appropriate for any of us to say who deserves to be on a coin and who doesn’t. Who’s more important - a scientist, a general or a poet?
I wanna hold one of those. I hope they make as many as bicentennial quarters. What the hell. We’ll chase all of those quarters. I’m thinking (lol) @CoinJockey73 looking for those. I think mr frog first. Waiting for friday
