So i have a couple mint sets that offer up some pretty good looking coins. I have thought a couple times about splitting them up. Do you all think this is a good idea? For example, I have a 1957 P mint set and I thought about splitting them up for either sale or for grading. Other sets that have beautifully toned coins. Is this an amateur move or am I better off just holding onto the set.

hold on to it def. Splitting up or opening an original proof set devalues it and makes it less desirerable

Would this be different for a mint set, just in thin plastic in an envelope?

    Break up the sets.

  6. It all depends on the purpose. If you want to collect intact mint/proof sets, then leave it alone. If you want to collect individual coins, then I see no problem opening them up. TC

I'm sure you've noticed there is no easy answer. :)

It sounds like you have nothing of HUGE value. Just keep reading here. There is no rush.

If there is a rush, then you really need to give specifics and pictures.

Unfortunatley some coins are only available in mint sets, So in order to get
Them you have to bust them open!!

Thanks for all the feedback. Yea I'm still at a crossroads here. But for now I think that I will keep them where they are in the set. Maybe at some later date will they come out.

Depending on the environment, they may continue toning if you leave them in the original packaging. This process will continue until eventually they are black. If they're at a good place, I would either take them out and put them in an airtight holder, or at least keep them in an air-free, humidity-free environment.

Bah, humbug with those sets. I order them from the Mint every year and have been for a long time. Eventually the value just goes down on them or most of them. At coin shows they sell for so much less than from the Mint. Yet individual coins from those sets sell for a real lot more. I order many of those sets and give some for Christmas Presents, others are broken up for Albums. The few I save are just in boxes and are a waste.
