Went to the mint yesterday, Oct 20/2005, to get the 2005 proof silver dollar with the red enamel. They said come back tomorrow, it gets officially released then. Went today, Fri. Oct 21/2005, they said they really get released on Monday, October 24th, they pushed up the date 'as an experiment, to see how many people actually tried to buy it today'. Unbelievable!!!! THEN, I was told that the mintage was 3000 (Instead of the published 5000), and that they only had a "couple" at the mint, and by 9:01AM Monday morning theyd all be sold out through phone orders, but I can try calling them then, and if they did have any I could use my Visa or MC and get it shipped, I said 'well I dont got Visa or MC, I got CASH right now! And I want one!' (Well actually I wanted 4, I was with someone else so we could each get 2.) Needless to say I left empty-handed. Even though I was TOLD in-person at the Royal Canadian Mint yesterday, just about 20 minutes before they closed, that TODAY they would be available for purchase, they would not sell to me! She even showed me one, so its not like they werent there. End of rant for now....
dope,if this is the coin,it seems to still be available on the site $99 Canadian but the credit card thing coild be a problem, maybe give someone the cash to use their card for you?? (old trick from college days) 2005 Limited-Edition Proof Silver Dollar - with “Enamel-Effect”—40th Anniversary of Canada’s National Flag New $99 Click "anniversary proofs" go to page 2
Seems like there are more and more places that will not accept cash due to sad cases of cash going missing. I hope someone will be kind enough to lend you their card or make him / her come along to purchase the item.
Oh no, it wasnt the paying with cash, they just werent going to sell them to me or anyone else, "they havent been released yet". Although they certainly seem to be available for purchase on their web page. AND a local coin dealer received their shipment of them today, and has them available for purchase right now!
I think it would be faster if you get them off from the dealer... mints usually have some wierd policies that I often never deal with them... sorry, can't really help you out on this one
the dealer here is in cohoots with the mint. Keep in mind the mintage on these silver dollars is 5000, but heres a copy/paste from this dealers web page... "There is a limit of 1 (one) per customer/address. Any multiple orders for this item to the same address will be cancelled. Orders for this item must be ordered with a minimum of $300 of other 2005 or 2006 Royal Canadian Mint Products on the same order" So looks like I'll try the mint again on Monday!
Wait, you are going to order at least 300 dollars worth of other mint products just to get that coin set?!?!?!?! *shock*
I noticed last evening they're for sale on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/2005-Red-Enamel...8345308362QQcategoryZ3383QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Bone
LOL..I didn't want one before but after all of this, I do now.I'm on their list because of buying all those annual flower half dollars and one roll of the poppy quarters...this is one addictive hobby.
Okay, I've got it from an inside source at the Canadian Mint (who shall be unnamed until such time as a court order forces me to reveal my source, propmting me to declare myself under contempt, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah....) that the Royal Canadian Mint has a policy right now of hating all American and Canadian internet users because we didn't support them in their efforts to raise llamas in the National Zoo. I guarantee that this information is 100% true based on the National Enquirer, and accept any criticism as you all just being wrong!
Hmm, I would say your best bet would be to go to a dealer or give the money to somone with a credit card and have them order it for you. I run into the same problem trying to get Britania proofs, but thats another story. Lets just say I have a very good idea that the mint has a policy of sending a lot of stuff to a certain dealer in Ottawa, very little of the good stuff ends up being sold by the mint now. Also the mint is finally starting to see the idea of lower mintages, the 5000 is one of the lowest I have seen in a long time for a Silver Candian Coin the only other low mintage I can think of off the top of my head was the Dutch Privy Maple Leaf.
Why is it that you can't order it? I was at the mint website and was able to add the coin to the basket without any problem. This is not something I was planning on buying but just wanted to see what the problem is but now I'm interested since its a limited edition. Was anybody else able to buy it?
A few years ago I tried to buy Horatio Hornblower (5 Pound) coin from the Royal Mint. Had all kinds of troubles. First I was told there was no real person called Horatio Hornblower on any coinage from the UK Mint, etc. I finally got it straightened out with a one armed fellow named Nelson When the coin arrived to my shock it was CLAD, not the silver version I could have sworn they (should have) made them in. Fine print, fine print is a must read. Bone
I forgot to mention, there's a limit of 2 per person not 1 as mentioned before. I hope I'm looking at the correct one if I do decide to buy.
There are a couple of problems I run into one is of my own making and that's that I don't like to use credit cards over the net, I'm a bit old fashioned that way. The other problem is a lot get sold off to dealer's, I don't mind that if I can find a trustworthy dealer as the proofs are a bit expensive and sometimes there are people selling mint strikes as proofs on some of the online auctions and with Britannia's it's a bit hard to tell from pictures because of the minting process they use on their mint strikes, unlike Eagles where it's really easy to tell the difference between a proof and mint strike even from a photo. So On that end I'm trying to find a good dealer I get one off of. If that fails I have a friend in England that will try and get one, but I tried last year and failed. I also had a friend try with a credit card as he is less paranoid about it than me and after he went through the process he got a message it was unavailable. Sooner or later I will get one patience is the key
Sorry I'm confused I should have asked, did you get the Britania or the new enameled dollar from The Royal Canadian Mint?
