1942-D over Horizontal D new variety??

    Hi folks, I've recently received this coin in the mail. The seller has made no mention of this curious mint mark but I want to see what you guys think. It does not appear to be the popular well established variety so.....what you say? Leo

    Are there any indications on other devices of a worn die?

    Has a very early die state strike.

    I would agree that it doesn't look like the D over inverted D variety as shown below (image courtesy NGC Variety Plus)

    I only ever owned one 1942-D over Horizontal D, shown below, MS65.

    My first impression was that it was a photographic artifact but if you are saying it is raised then it seems that it must be either another RPM or very strong MD.

    Here's the ov., a very colorful coin. NT or AT? The owner has said, it's been that way for 35 years.

    My mistake;should have called it a D over Inverted D. Difficult to imaging something got on the die right next to the MM. Another mystery until other examples surface.
