I thought I had, but I received the right coin back. The problem was the metal shaving, burr or whatever it was wasn’t there. Somewhere in the grading process it was snapped off. All that was left was the slit in the rim where the metal was embedded. My first post showed the before and after photos.
@Gam3rBlake You might want to try Variety Slabbing Service (www.varslab.com) and ask them if they would professionally photograph the coin with their Seal on it stating that the feature you describe is a Die Break; that would preserve the PCGS Slab while also giving you the Pedigree of the anomaly, which would make the coin easier to sell.
I have doubts about this being a die break. If it were it would show up on other 2021-D Morgan’s identical to this one. You can see the sliver of metal lying just above the surface of the coin (red arrow). The blue arrow is pointing at the shadow from the metal.
When I first started collecting, I bought some gold coins from a dealer. He told me he was going to a show and that he would have them graded. One came back MS61 and the other came back with a "Details". The first one was a $10 Liberty Head and the second was a $20 Liberty Head. It gave me a nasty taste in my mouth for TPGs and I have never sent another coin to be graded. I have bought some, though. Since I'm not in it to become rich, I don't care if it's a MS69 or MS70, unless I am buying a coin, it will give me an idea of what I may have to pay for it. Also, it was said in an earlier entry that there was "something special" about a coin minted in Denver. Any idea what they meant by that reference?
offer it up for sale as an error (die crack) add 50.00 to normal retail and let it go, def worth more to an error collector, anyways
I don’t think it’s a die break or strike through anymore. I think it’s an error having to do with the burr.
I don’t mind. I have my own 70 D so I don’t need another one. I just want to recoup some of my money xD
Yes the Denver Mint had the most production issues and the least amount of quality control. That’s obvious just from the population reports showing the ratio of 69s to 70s is much higher for the D’s than any other of the 2021 Morgans. Notice there are about the same 69 Ds as 69 Os despite 3,000 more O’s having been submitted compared to D’s.
I agree. It has to do with the metal, fin, burr or what ever it is called. Since it is attached at the rim I’m not sure what kind of error it will be labeled. Mine is there for error grading right now with the same error. I’m a little anxious to see the results.
Thanks for the info. I was lucky enough to get a D and an S. I also have the 1921D and 1921S. None have been graded. I may try to get them packaged together (or not). What do you think?
