21mm - I'm no big hairstyle historian, but I imagine sideways cornrows were all the rage. His thicc skull with neck fat is adorned with a beard. Probably a lady-killer. On the reverse there appears to be a cowardly ancient Frenchman. This meek gentlemen has a less-refined sideways haircut, and the confused expression certifies him as a lesser being. Sadly, he died a virgin and now his likeness is forever engraved in bronze so future generations can giggle at his misgivings. Sadly, I couldn't find a match when I used the above descriptions in acsearch. Can anyone help?
Did you try searching for Herakles? Thick neck and beard is usually him, although if it’s a Roman provincial (which it may be) it could just be an unrealistic portrait of an emperor.
Hey @TIF - I looked through the RPC with some relevant search terms, including various ways of spelling Heracles, but was unable to find it. There's a lot not listed in the RPC so that still doesn't mean it's not a provincial coin though.
The closest I can think of are those pseudo-autonomous coins from Perinthus with Herakles on one side and Apollo on the other, but this is just a wild guess…
@Ocatarinetabellatchitchix - I've looked at the lettering and they match. While obviously the die is different, I believe this is it. Thanks a ton!
