Sad news today that Harvey G. Stack went to "Heaven". Harvey was one of the founders of the prestigious, "Stack's" Auction house. He will be missed by all.
I posted it in the coin chat section here and as I type this, has been ignored. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/harvey-g-stack-has-passed-away.391543/ Surprising since it's a busy forum. PCGS boards I posted at have been active.
Sad. I believe he was 91. It was actually his father and uncle who founded the company in 1933. It's interesting to read the series of articles that Harvey wrote a while back on the company's history, decade by decade.
I didn't know he played a part in the 50 state quarters. That is what got me into collecting. My mother had a collection from her travels which I loved looking through, but it was my first opportunity to acquire new and interesting coins on my own. RIP.
Stack's/ Paramount and NFA where my first dealings with auction houses. The latter two are sadly extinct, however, I still get many great coins from Stack's/ Bowers up to this day. He will be missed by all....
As an ANA National Volunteer working at conventions, it was always fun seeing Harvey on the bourse floor, and auction sites. Quite a legacy.
My first coin won from a Stack's Coin Galleries auction in 1989: this Septimius Severus / Hercules denarius. Before I retired and moved to cheaper coins, they were a good source.
I first bought coins (British, not ancient) on the second floor at Stack's store on 57th Street in the mid-1980s. But the coin I have with the oldest Stack's provenance is this denarius of M. Herennius (Crawford 308/1b), which I bought at a JAZ Numismatics auction in April 2021 (and posted yesterday in the thread about JAZ). But it has a further history going back to Frederick B. Shore, and, beyond that, to Stack’s Public Auction Sale, “A Collection of Ancient Roman Coins,” June 14-15, 1971, Lot 127, at p. 16:
My first coin from Stack's Auction was in 1985. A AV 100 Francs 1862-BB Strasbourg Mint/ Louis napoleon III/ was also my first "slabbed" coin.
Wow -- I didn't realize that you've been collecting gold coins for almost 40 years! I imagine it was a mail bid auction, given that you don't live anywhere near NYC and presumably never have?
Donna/ I was gently nudged into coins by my Grandfather back in Germany. He used to tell me stories about pirates/ treasure when i was 4/5 years old. Also the "Brothers Grimm" Fairy Tales had lots of stories about gold coins. Then, when I was eight or so, my Dad (also a coin collector) got me hooked by giving me a gold coin for Christmas/ Birthday presents. I went to the CNA coin show with my Dad when I was 15/ NFA/ Stacks/ Paramount had reps there/ thus I got on their mailing lists, for auction catalogues. Now, I get 200 catalogues each year, have a vast library. Probably, would be better today for parents to get kids into numismatics then "smartphones". John PS: Imagine, after all that time/ I am still stuck at 985 AV/ 72 AR coins I hope to break the 1000 in 2022. If, you have come up to Ottawa, I would love to show you my coll.
