Beautiful gold piece on the bay, on auction and that's a big deal as you hardly ever see these for auction, especially on the bay! Too many dollars for this me! :) Just posted for discussion, any guesses on the final price?? Price is at $2,508.00, will go over 5k, what you think? Anyone gonna bid?? :D

I definitely wouldn't bid on a raw coin like that on Ebay.

For all I know it could be a Chinese counterfeit that is gold plated.

Good point, it'll be interesting to see how many people bid on it. I don't know anything about the series at all. Maybe someone will chime in and educate me on why it looks fake as I don't see anything that looks fake at all. That said, I haven't placed a bid either! :D

Yeah something about the gold just looks odd. The ones I’ve seen in person in slabs had more of an orange ish gold color but idk if that says anything about real vs fake.

Idk something about it just looks odd to me but I can’t point it out.

I do agree with potty dollar though that if it was real it would be slabbed by now.

Not necessarily true. There are plenty of high dollar coins out there that are ungraded.

Here's pics of the same year 1807. The only thing that looks a little bit off on the one above is the bottom of the bust, right above the date, seems to have an odd line under it! Also, the date on the above looks too good somehow, idk. Hopefully someone who knows the series will chime in, if anyone knows it would be @johnmilton! :D

Just a casual collector's point of view. If I'm going to fork over $2500+ for any Coin, I want to see it graded and authenticated!

As for fake, If we use @Jack D. Young procedure or any of the authenticators, We should first search for a die pairing.
I am mainly looking at the date position, hair curl, drapery design, and position of the star next to the drapery.
    This is bust right BD-1

Maybe we can try and figure if this coin is real or if it is a counterfeit.

The graded example that @fretboard posted in this thread is a BD-6
Notice the hair curl, Re punching/doubling of the date, Star next to the dentils, and far from the bust, also the base of the one over three dentils.

Great analysis there! :cigar: I think you may be right and after looking over your examples the line at the bottom of the bust I mentioned previously could be completely legit. Yes, I think the one being auctioned off is legit! :D

Thank you, I don't know if the coin is legit or not. I only was only able to look at the one in post #7. I don't specialize or even collect gold coins. I will take a look at the Ebay example in a little bit. Thought I had it earlier but don't know where I wrote it down.

Yes, I don't know for absolute that it's real but I think it is. The only marker that I wasn't sure of was the bottom line of the bust, right above the date. After looking at your number 5 example, it has a similar bottom line as well, that's why I think it's legit. The coin is not my series at all, I have a couple of Classic Heads so every now and then I look at the pricier coins, not to buy, just to look at and daydream! :D

@Pickin and Grinin , thanks for the call out! Good analysis as well.

Nothing obviously wrong with this one and a friend and gold expert is following the auction with interest in bidding.

That's a pretty nice looking coin, with a few rim dings mentioned in the listing. expect a pile of snipe bids at the end. Get out the popcorn!

The Ebay example looks genuine, but either cleaned or ex-jewelry, with potential rim issues, which would explain why it's not holdered. Here's mine for reference -

Thats true but I think collectors like that would sell via auction not EBay. Ya know? Like GC or HA.
