I am working on a scholarship project for college. We must theoretically put several items in a time capsule and wait 200 years . The items put in the time capsule must provide a "life of financial indepedence" for my decendents. The total cost of the items in the capsule cannot exceed $500.00. I am working on items that will become more rare as time goes on. Stamps I believe will become extinct and valuable and coins were my other idea.

    Any thoughts

State quarters might be something that are cheap now but collectable later

Here's some thinking outside of the box...

10 gallons of distilled water. Costs almost nothing now, could be more valuable than gold in 200 years.

Minerals, precious metals, water - all of that will likely be virtually worthless 200 years from now. Technology will have advanced to the point to be able to extract all the minerals you want, cheaply, from the ground & ocean. Same for water, desalination and recycling will be the norm. Same for precious metals - more gold and silver exist in ordinary salt water than has ever been mined. Not to mention the minerals, precious metals, etc that will be being mined on other planets 200 years from now.

You want something that will increase in value in 200 years, that cost less than $500 now - buy some books. Not just any books, books that have a very low number published, like some coin books. Many books on coins have 500 or fewer copies published. And have them signed by the author.

I have a few books that I paid $75 for less than 10 years ago. Today those books sell for around $1500. Imagine what they will cost in 200 years

Like I have always said, you can never have enough books ;)

You could try a sampling of each, It would provide a better overall picture!!

  11. I disagree that precious metals, gems, etc. will be worthless in 200 years. OTOH, technology will more likely have advanced to the point that books will be fully replaced by electronic media in 200 years. We have seen this happen already in some domains. Of course, there will always be some nostalgic folks who want a a specific key book perhaps signed by the author (if the book hasn't degraded and you can verify the authenticity of signature), but many more would rather have those diamonds/gold for jewelry, etc. TC

I'd choose a few provenanced antiquities or ancient coins. If the trend continues, governments will eventually ban the sale of new antiquties, making the current ones more valuable. Imagine if you bought a Roman statue in 1800 - museums like the Met and the Getty would be sniffing around now, assuming its well documented!

Or better yet, pick a couple of cheap stocks in tech companies. Think of the baby Bells :D

Well ..you might want to include a dictionary since you spelled independence wrong.

This is not an literal question but an analytical one. You will be evaluated on how well you argue your reasoning behind your choices. Not so much on the validity of the objects you choose. It's analytical not quantitative. Whatever you choose will most likely be wrong or at best way off. 200 years ago, land and agriculture made people rich. These days it's shock and awe that create unearned wealth.

With a budget of only $500 ..part of the assignment is to test your allocation skills. All eggs in one basket or diversification? What is important to me now and what will be important then.

Collector key date coins as always and never in a million years stamps!

Collector key date coins as always and never in a million years stamps!
Satmps are junk in all but 1 out of 1000 cases and there are no really good ones for that kind of money.
    I'd buy lower grade, VG to Fine 1912-S 1913-S 1914-S Lincoln's.
I'd buy a high grade 1996 American silver eagle MS-69.
A circulated VF or so 1912-D Nickel.
Then try to squeeze in a fairly low grade, VG to Fine 33-S or 38-D Walker.
If any money left over maybe a 1960-P small date in gem BU.

And this only if you can learn or have someone else pick problem free properly graded (no rim bumps or black spots) coins.

Can't a lot of these books be freely copied or reprinted once the copyright runs out?

I've kind of been holding off on a few purchases for that reason alone... lol.

A collection of expired credit/debit/gift cards should be inexpensive or free, and maybe like collecting 1794 cents in 1800 if coins and bills go the way of electronic transfers.

My first thought was DNA from current politicians or entertainment people or heritage plant seeds, as when the ozone layer goes........., but that is currently being done.
