Happy New Year to everyone. Now that our coins have all aged another year, what's You're oldest coin you have in You're collection? Mine is the 1799 Silver Dollar.
Well, if you meant oldest regardless of issuance, it would be this: But if you meant US Federal issues (1792/3 and later):
US coinage- 1803 Large Cent I have several Colonial and Pre-Colonial issues And I have a small number of coins that I can only call Ancients as is 300-600 BC
Oldest Federal US - 1795 Flowing Hair $1: Oldest Colonial American (as defined by Red Book) - 1723 Rosa Americana Penny (I also have a 1723 Rosa twopence): Oldest Dated - 1481 Double Briquet (Dubbel Vuurijzer) from Brabant: Oldest (Groat of Henry VI 1430-31):
My oldest U.S. coin is an 1828 half cent, info from PCGS. No pictures of the coin because my phone is terrible, but this coin has a very pleasing chocolate brown color and nice eye appeal. The oldest world coin I own is a uniface medieval pfennig from Cologne, Germany. The exact KM# is hard to pinpoint becsuse NGC lacks pictures of all but 1 of the uniface pfennigs of this period. The closest match references Noss 52 as the coin I own. Mine is a bit better struck than this coin, but it has a small hole. These coins are paper thin! My oldest piece of exonumia is an example of the following coin. Very well struck with an overall pleasing design. A silver plated copper souvenir exists, but this example weighs to the original silver issue. I lucked out on this example. I purchased a pound of world coins with a bonus silver coin included. You guessed it, this was the bonus coin! And lastly, my oldest and only Greek ancient coin. Actual pictures this time, plus info.
I can't imagine a better candidate for a bottom pop collectable Poor1 Details coin with the choice of Ugly Plug, Counterstamp, Scratched 1858 and Corrosion as descriptions. And I still think it has more character than better grade coins. but it is RAW.
That’s a nice looking 1794. I’m surprised it’s details graded, as some in straight graded slabs look worse. My oldest Federal coin is also a 1794 LC. A 1795 Flowing Hair Half is my oldest Federal for which I have pictures handy. Then there would be my Rosa Americana as my earliest coin struck for what is now the US. My oldest coin with a modern date is a 1598 Three Brothers Thaler. I’m not sure what my oldest ancient is. “Old” carries more weight for me when the date is written in modern Arabic numerals.
Thank you very much for the attribution. I do love the look of the obverse. I wish the reverse looked as nice.
The Reverse IS nice, but the die state appears to show evidence of die sinking at ONE CENT. It is not noted for S-65, but is common as others reach the end of their die life. Just maybe, it might even be a new Die State [X] or Noyes H. It depends on whether the copper powers can agree on it being Die State related or just wear. New Die State is my vote from the photos. The Details is almost a default position of Environmental Damage for early copper. But I have noted that TPGs have a tendency to drop both the grade AND add Detail or Genuine on the label. So a technical detail Grade of Fine looks about right. Please forgive me for carrying on and hijacking the thread. I will cease.
