Looks like your groupings aren't bringing out the full picture. I have about 4500 coins cataloged and don't know how many more are in the plastic tubs waiting to get into the book. About 500+/- different monetary regimes from 250-300 separate issuers, including both current countries (US, Japan, Germany, etc.), disappeared countries (East Germany, USSR, etc.), and former States now part of federated countries (German States, Indian Princely States, etc).

I would think this poll would be directed to new collectors only. Not sure about many older collectors but all the collectors I know probably have more than the highest number on that poll.
For example I know I have well over 3,000 Mercury Dimes alone.
Used to have 2,650 Steel Lincoln Cents but gave 500 to a YN.
Possibly a better distribution of the quantities would be in 100 coin ingrements. Something like 0 to 100, 101 to 500, 501 to 1,000, etc.

I was not sure what groupings to suggest. I would have not guessed that so many are in the highest category, but this is a coin forum of some pretty heavt hitters. Maybe in the future someone can try another one with different parameters.

Coins that are in inventory and dated 1909 or older, approximately 500. This also includes medals and tokens. I only collect US coins and currency; 95% are from the denomination of a dime or more. I do have a few world coins which pertain to former /current US Territories, since they are historic in nature.

I have a lot more coins than coins I consider part of my "collection."

I've never counted, but like Just Carl I have more than 3,000 just in mercs and a few other denominations. As for non-junk coins I might have between 1-2K, but thats just a wild guess.

Also I did not included bulk coins, bulk coins kept for bullion or anything valued under $5.00. Those items are not listed in my inventory.

It sounds to me like most of the people who are posting numbers upwards of 3,000 are including their hoards. :D

What legitimate use could anyone have for 3,000 Mercury dimes? Lol

You'd be surprised how quickly they add up.
First you start getting a set together then it get's upgraded. Then there is that second set that needs filled too.
That's when you realize that there are bulk deals on these dimes so you get them and make sets just missing a few key dates...21 21d and 16d.
Pretty soon your putting together high grade short sets then Full band sets and where does it stop...
Well above 3,000 of them that's were :D

I voted 0-100 but I only included those coins that I paid a numismatic premium for. I'm probably right around 100 coins give or take a few.

If I included all of the coins I'm hoarding, including 90% junk silver coins, the number would easily be over 10,000 coins.

The majority of my collection consists of graded coins. I have just over 500. I might have another couple hundred raw coins. I put myself in the 500-800 range.

I don't collect junk coins or hoard circulated coins. I hate that I have so many coins and have been considering selling off a significant portion of my collection for at least a year. I would go crazy if I had thousands of coins, don't know how you guys do it.
