Recently purchased this large cent and give it a grade of VF 20. Just wondering what the experts think.
Yes, a technical grade of VF-20 is warranted. But, the rim and edge damage would net it down to about F-12 using the EAC grading system.
I would say that VF-20 to 30 would accurate for the normal retail market. “EAC grading” is a bit of a game. Yes, they might call it “Fine-15,” but the EAC dealers will charge you VF money for it, so don’t worry about their lower grade.
This is very accurate. Other differences include distinct Technical Details grading and NET Ranking and Value gradiing. They also do not deduct for Die State deterioration like TPGs. EAC tends to use much older standards that look out of place in the modern TPG grade inflation world. Rather than disagree on the standards, just think of it like US Dollars vs Canadian Dollars. They both say DOLLAR, but it really has two meanings which are only loosely related.
