So I put this 1899 Indian head penny under the scope and noticed all the marks going on in the date so I compared it to my other 1899 Wich ended up not having anything at all especially like this and I was wondering what is this a rpd I looked on Indianvarites website and it looks like #37 Wich is only one mark on one of the 9's but it has so much going on and on the website it doesn't have all the pictures for the varietys what do you guys think it is?
    1. You can see sarlifs above the number ones sarlifs
    2. The 8 has all types of things going on outside of it and a line in each of the loops
    3. Both nines in the loops of the nine and the circle have lines
I used 2 filter's on the date to show that the doubleing or what ever it is stays there and is the same color as the actual date and to show it out of the junk on it. I'm just wondering what you guys think it is? Polish_20211230_114644757~3.jpg Polish_20211230_114644757~4.jpg IMG_20211231_161330_01.jpg IMG_20211231_161330_02.jpg

If you are referring to CONECA RPD-037, then no. There would be a die chip on the eighth feather. A lot of the Indian RPDs are really minor and are hard to see in pictures. You would need to get rid of the gunk and have fairly clean surfaces to diagnose that coin from pictures. If you start with the alignment of the numeral 1 to a dentil, that will help eliminate some varieties.

How would I safely remove the gunk I'm completely new to coin collecting with less then 6 months collecting?

    Try an Acetone Bath?

I'd second the acetone bath suggestion. That looks like gunk that acetone is great for removing. If you search for "acetone" here on CT you'll find a lot of advice on how to go about it. Look on the upper right corner of the page for the search function. Be sure to read several threads so you get a complete picture of how to do it. Good luck and Happy New Year.

See the 2 red arrows? The doubled flag on the 1 as well the 9 in the denticals. 20220101_125932.jpg Polish_20211230_114644757_3.jpg

If you try acetone, don't make the mistake of using fingernail polish remover. It has additives, like lotions and such, to soft cuticles and it will leave unfavorable marks on your coin. You can get 100% acetone at most hardware stores, like ACE Hardware or a box store. Good luck and post your results.

    BTW - Welcome to CT.
