First of I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone here on the forum a very happy and healthy 2022! I think 2021 has been a though year for a large number of members and my best wished go to all who's health has suffered from the pandemic. I do not post often on the forum, mostly because I consider my numismatic knowledge insufficient for a meaningful contribution, but I highly appreciate all the very inspiring postings. Please keep those highly interesting post coming. At first I thought 2021 was not a numismatically fruitful year but making up the final score makes me very satisfied with the end result. Maybe some disappointing results a auctions have affected my first thought. My TOP 10 (order changing from day to day..) 10) DIVO CONSTANTIO MEMORIAE AETERNAE struck by Constantine I for Constantius I Not the best flan but one of the more scares variations from the series. I especially like the (Hercules) club above the lion on the reverse. 9) Two of the four "The London Mint of Constantius & Constantine" plate coins I was able to acquire this year directly from Lee Toone. Although not the most spectacular reverse type, the provenance is highly interesting. 8) IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO CONSTANTIO COGN Commemorative coin struck by Maxentius for Constantius I. I really liked the COGN (for Cognat) indicating a kinsman. I already had the ADFINI variation in my collection. 7) Two coins (from the total of 4) from the more scares CI-HS series from Lugdunum I was able to add to my collection this year. CI-HS is most likely a mark of value (100 sestertii, with CI=100:1 and HS=Sestertius). Although the more unlikely but interesting "Constantine Imperator Herculius Senior" also has been suggested. 6) Constantine II, SAECVLI FELICITAS. Although a tad rough, this coins is from a very rare issue from Rome. As a bonus it also has a nice bust of Constantine II holding a Victory in his right hand and a map in the left. 5) I am slowly building a nice collection of the dynastic anepigraphic small coinage of Constantine and his family. This year I found a Helena from Antiochia (completing the family for this mint) and a Constantius II from Cyzicus. I consider them b very rare. 4) VOT X / ET XV F for Constantine I from the Rome mint with the intriguing EROS mint mark. Unlisted officina P (prima) for this coin. RIC lists only officinae T (tertia) and Q (quarta).
3) My collection of early Follis of Constantius I from London is getting extensive... This is one of the more nice ones from 2021, a rare one. LMCC 3.01.025; RIC 38 corr. (bust type). 2) Although looking quite identical to 2) this actually a rather difficult to find earlier Nummus of Constantius I. LMCC 1.03.009, unreduced, unmarked Nummus with armored bust. Also a beautiful coin in hand. 1) I have a soft spot for coins with Constantine Ib as a Caesar. This is a beautiful one from Lugdunum, acquired from Frank Robinson. Please show me your related coins!
Adriaan, My favorites are #2, 1, & 8, in that order . The portrait on the DIVO issue of Constantius I is exceptional for that coin type . I have a nummus of Constantius I as Caesar with a similar bust type as your #2 pictured below. Two years ago I scored a handsome nummus of Constantine the Great from the Trier Mint pictured below. Constantine I as Caesar, AD 306-309 (struck c. summer AD 307), Trier Mint, Officina 1. AE Nummus: 8.73 gm, 29 mm, 6 h. RIC 719b. Ex CNG Inventory 774824, July 2006.
Wow, that MAXENTIVS DIVO CONSTANTIO COGN is awfully impressive! I also like the Constantine II SAECVLI FELICITAS, as well as the anepigraphic types. I added a (probably imitative) Crispus from Trier to my collection this year. From Antioch I have a Constantius II.
You've had an excellent year. The two Constantius folles from London are the highlight for me, particularly the early example.
#8 and #3 have me amazed. An interesting group of rarities/great provenance over all Happy new year Q
I collect Constantine. Those would be lovely additions to any Constantine collection. Some unusual specimens. Love that memorial coin for Constantius with a mausoleum reverse. With an eye like that, you should post more.
