We found this in a coin collection we purchased many years ago. Any one have an idea what it might be worth or if it is even real. I have read there are a lot of fakes.

You might want to look at this and review some of the posts. From your images, I don't believe it is authentic. I.m certain at some point others will chime in too.http://www.cointalk.com/t79605/

If it is a fake, it is a darn good one. I would be careful with it and have it authenticated. If genuine it would be worth at least a couple thousand dollars.

A check of the design and devices of this coin reveals a match to the Noe-17 Variety, Small Planchet Pine Tree Shilling.

There is nothing that tells me, as far as I can ascertain from the photos, that this coin is a fake. In fact to me it looks genuine. I am not an expert, far from it, but it looks OK to me.

Check the diameter and weight: diameter should be 22-26 mm, and the weight 70-72 grains.

I Believe that this coin has been clipped, this accounts for the absence of beading on the edge. Therefore, both the diameter, and specially the weight will be below the norm.

If genuine, and IMHO there is a good chance that it is, it is a valuable coin. As the other have mentioned, expert appraisal is needed.

    Good luck!

Oh, to answer the question about its value: IF genuine, I would grade F12/F15, clipped net VG10, worth about $1200-1700. Again, that is my opinion.

Eduard, If this actually is authentic, I think it more closely resembles the die state of Noe 4.

Neither am I proclaiming an expertise with these types, but something just does not sit right with me. I hope for the Op's situation, that it turns out to be authentic.
