Merry Christmas everyone! I originally just wanted to make a post wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year… But I want to keep it coin related by sharing a coin I got from my uncle this Christmas. It’s my first ever CAC coin! My uncle is the only one in my family who collects coins and every Christmas he tends to get me a coin for my collection and this is what he gave me this year. One thing I’m curious about is that it came in a PCGS slab but the PCGS slab itself was in this “Intercept Shield” box thing that I’ve never seen before. Has anyone seen or heard of these Intercept Shield things before? I’m curious what they are for? Anyway feel free to share your Christmas coins here!
I didn't get any Christmas coin gifts.. But I did Metal Detect a 1942 Winged Liberty Head Dime on Christmas Eve It was detected Silver coin find #109 for 2021 Merry Christmas!
For the last couple of weeks, my son has been quizzing me about Trade Dollars. I thought he was interested in one for himself so I was surprised to see this when I opened a gift from him. An 1876-S Type 2/2. My first Trade. Not sure what it grades at.
Congratulations on the coin and the Uncle!!! Intercept Shield in theory protects coins from corrosion and/or tarnish. At any given time there is always crud/gases in the air that can chemically affect your coin. I suggest you type the web address on the box into your browser and check out the link. There is info on the site about how the technology works.
There is a lot of love there, your uncle is special. You are very fortunate, thanks for sharing your special gift.
Yeah I went to the website when I got it and I read that too but I was wondering if it’s necessary for a coin already in a PCGS slab?
Nice one! I’m not an expert at grading grade dollars but to me I would guess yours is about XF. Most of the details are present and there isn’t a whole lot of wear but a lot of the luster is missing (or at least looks missing from the picture).
Slabs are not air-and moisture-tight, unless they became so very recently. There's a story of a guy who dipped a dollar while in its slab. The problem was that he couldn't rinse out the dip. There's more, but I'll leave it at that.
Thanks! Last year he got me an MS63 1921 Morgan Dollar from the P, S and D mints and before that it was an MS61 1884 CC Morgan Dollar. But it's not always Morgan Dollars. One year it was an MS64 1925 S California Commemorative Half Dollar and another it was an MS64RD 1909 VDB Doubled Died Obverse Lincoln Cent (non S). It's nice to have someone else in the family who collects.
It was a very astute and protective move, by your Uncle, particularly for that piece, and the toning level. I wholeheartedly concur with the choice of your Uncle. My Uncle Seamus would have spent it on a bottle of Bushmills. He was not ever exactly a bright fellow, though.
If you have more than one uncle, I'd give that one the title of "Favorite Uncle." LOL I've seen that before and got a couple from dealers I've bought coins from. Had no idea they were supposed to help keep a coin from tarnishing.
