Anyone know if there was a master hub doubling for 1972 with an extra bar above the 2? I found this on some Ps and thought it was a new class VIII, but now I've found some '72S with the same extra bar.
Humm, makes you want to think it's a die chip not a class 8. Interesting to look at. Maybe larger photo's will help.
Unfortunately that's about as close as my camera is going to resolve it. Looks just like the pointed tip of the lower bar in the two making me think tilted hub doubling. I guess it could be a well place master hub die chip.
Here's the P & S. Though the Philly is in a later die state, they appear to have come from the same master.
I'm not completely sure how all this works but I remember reading somewhere that All master dies, including those used in the Mint's numismatics and medals programs, are manufactured in the Die Manufacturing Division of the Philadelphia Mint. Mint marks are placed in the hub at Philadelphia. So I think it could very well be that the dies started out from the same master die and then the mintmark added. What do you think about it?
This one is from a master die, there is one very strong one This one is from a master die, there is one very strong one DDO-010 that is a true doubled die. You will find many of these with a minor extra bar in the "7" though in all mints.
Thanks BHP. Apparently Coneca lists the doubling on the "2" as Class II. They also list Class I doubling on "LIBERTY" and the motto, but I didn't pick that up.
I was wrong on that comment - I looked at the new I was wrong on that comment - I looked at the new Authoritive Reference of Lincoln Cents by Wexler yesterday and there is a 72-S doubled die with a strong extra bar on the "2" listed as WDDO-003. Also the 72-P with extra bar on "2" is not WDDO-010 but WDDO-009 - this is the one that I have seen many different strength bars on the "2". I'm still not sure if some are master dies or all are true listible doubled dies at this time. Please get this book if you are going to keep learning about these. It is well worth any money paid in the long run.
