From the begining of that thread I was wondering if someone would dare to tell the word : money

Of course, all of the above applies, and money without them will certainly not make a great collector, but on the other hand all of the above without money will restrain ambitions of the potential great collector. Conclusion : money helps

That plus learning what a problem coin is, how many there are and how few are not. Plus paying for your raising - it ain't cheap!!!

Look at the face of a 10 year old that just got a new coin for his/her collection.

A great collector has a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, a desire to share knowledge, and the wisdom to admit when they are wrong. Nothing else is needed, you can be a great collector of cull lincoln cents if you want, the depth of your collection has nothing to do with your greatness as a collector.

 

Some final words for the OP. Cultivating an interest in the hobby to youngsters.

A collection of great coins....obviously.

 

The lady with the most coins wins. Graded coins are also important anymore. Just my opinion.

 

Since humility is not a virtue that I possess, I will declare myself a great coin collector. To answer what makes me a great collector, please read the following passage which is the introduction to my registry set.

 

What makes a great a collector is one who hungers for knowledge through study.A great collector is a curator and a preservationist. Most importantly being a good ambassador. Treating people respectfully and fair in all dealings and promoting the Hobby to younger ones interested in Numismatics by GIVING coins,knowledge and time were you can to them to spark in them a lifelong interest in Numismatics. A sign of a Good collector is one who is constantly growing in knowledge and is not overly pre occupied with the profit motive. I have loved this Hobby for 35 years and just last year went to the US Mint in Philadelphia for the very first time.(Next year God Willing The Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa) a great collector joins the ANA promotes the Hobby and behaves impeccably. Remember its not just about buying coins!
