I posted the thread below a while ago and the reaction had some great comedy value and each time I open the post the first picture shows the advert that pops up for a socket back box but they are bugging me so Ive done some more research & digging https://www.cointalk.com/threads/mysterious-steel-blank-found-with-a-load-of-us-cents.386936/ Some more info these came from my granddads coin collection who was a watch maker & jeweller and collected coins ive attached a pic of his coin collection suitcase which was full. His nephew whow lived in Florida and was a director at Matel in the us bought US coins to my grandadds jewellers shop whenever he visited and the pair of them would sit with eye loupes examining them. Thes 2 blanks were in his collection both together in a sleeve pic attached. The knockouts from a galvanised electrical socket back box is 20mm and weigh between 1.6g - 2g whereas both blanks are 19mm the thinner blank weighs 2.43g and the thicker blank weighs 4.79. heres some more pics The pop up advert on OP : Funny sleeve suitcase more to follow
And heres some images from various info sources re blank planchets If im not mistaken I see some similarities so : 1. is it worth checking these out further 2. where do I go now to get an answer as to whether these are blank planchets or indeed just electrical back box knockouts please
The socket back box returns the knockouts are 20mm & 15mm for metal conduit or grommets, Im a builder ive bought & chucked 1000's My dads old man was a jeweller I just cant imagine why he would bag 2 knockouts up for keeping unless he had a horribly dark sense of humour cause he always told me the suitcase was mine when he left the planet hahahaha. Im struggling to just file them in - B1N (the bin)
It reminds me of when I was a kid in the 60s and there was a machine shop that produced maybe boxes like that or saw blades, not sure but we used to dig through their bin behind the place and find slugs that were perfect dimes in the bottom of it. Rotten kids that my friends and I were they got us many bottles of pop and candy from vending machines.
They are electrical box knockouts. The burrs where they were originally connected to the box prove that. They do not have to be any particular size or weight.
