I have had a bit of a lean year with regards to my collection and so it gives me great pleasure to add a coin to my Eastern Severan collection at the end of 2021. I collect the early IMP VIII eastern issues which typically have the obverse legend L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII but have a special liking for a sub-series that have the extended legend L SEPT SEVER PERT AVG IMP VIII. We have no idea why some have the extended legend but I am aware of at least 10 reverse types associated with them. This coin has the extended SEVER legend but is also of interest to me because it has a split end to the obverse legend VI-II with an additional dot on the end. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– L SEPT SEVER P-ERT AVG IMP VI-II., Laureate head right Rev:– FORT REDVC, Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopia Minted in Laodicea ad Mare, A.D. 196 – 197 References:– RIC -, RSC -, BMCRE - This coin has helped me confirm the reading of the following coin as they are obverse die matches. I did have one in my collection already but the quite different obverse legend break L SEPT SEVER PERT - AVG IMP VIII . also with the dot at the end makes it different enough for me to want both in my collection.
@dougsmit - Great die matched pair. The only one I have from that obverse die has parts of the legend off flan.... Yours help confirm my original reading. A different reverse die to your Fortuna. By the way the standard referebnces do contain some coins from the same type as my OP.
