Possible Fourrée ?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by Rockymountaincoin, Dec 20, 2021.

  1. Guys a local seller has offered me this piece, to me it looks to have been plated. Copper plated with silver , and some black gunk or residue ontop. Any opinions?

I will post two of the sellers photos and one that i modified to bring out what i believe to be a copper core

From the pics, it looks like a normal denarius to me but with discolored adhesions, which happens.

  4. Thank you for your response. Maybe i am being overly paranoid...

Ask the seller to weigh it. It looks fine from the photo. Usually a fourrée with that much wear will have some of the core busting through, but not always. Have you seen the coin in hand?

  6. Haven't seen it in hand. Maybe its just the terrible photographs. But to me it looks as if copper is poking through in spots. I asked the seller if this is just the photos or ? He never got back to me and just dropped off... If he never gets back to me that may be a red flag. If he sends me a message i will tell him i need to inspect it in person and weigh it etc. Just being cautious here..

as a seller on eBay what I have found is that basically anytime someone asks any question whatsoever before shipping, you should probably just cancel the order, there always ends up being another problem lol..

It's not a rare coin and you can find one in better condition for not a whole lot of money.

IMO, just pass on the coin. 2nd century denarii in low condition are literally available by the hundreds - in fact I sold a big old pile of them for about $9 each and still made a profit on the sale. That you felt compelled to make a thread makes me think the seller is asking a lot more than the $8-10 this coin is worth?

I don't care what the coin is, if you don't like it, don't buy it. I see no reason to think this coin is fourree but I agree that 90% of the coins like this I see are being sold for a lot more than they are worth to people who will either regret the purchase when they discover that better can be had for the same money or they will quit the hobby altogether in disgust. I agree with the $8-10 number given above. I have had similar coins that I paid more for but ended up selling for a loss. I still have many worse coins grade-wise but that have something that added interest 'to me'. Why do you want this coin? What is it worth to you?

My fourree of Trajan cost me $25 in 1990. I was stupid. I saw something of interest then. Now?

Jeez, where do you get denarii where you can make a profit at $9 each? The cheapest single denarius I ever bought was $12 for an awful Vespasian. Second cheapest was $20 for a Septimius

It was a Triskeles lot back in 2017 - I think this lot and maybe one other

Worked out to be be about $7.50 each and after months of trying to sell them piecemeal, listed the whole thing on eBay to cut my losses and free up some capital - it hammered for I think $1300 for 150ish coins.

  13. Guys i figured since it was local I'd take it. I told the seller ten bucks. He said it was worth more and i left it at that. I figured i wasn't going to push it for something thats not valuable and waste my time.
