Brian, there are 9 pages of posts related to the 1964 SMS Kennedy that come up in a CT search. If I recall, the PUP on the "4" has been shown............somewhere! ~Chris
I have looked and cannot see anything different from the coin I have. I have 30. 64 s in total one has a very shinny finish and a dangling 4. Just want to see more pics before I freak out
The story about the 64SMS is quite revealing. You should read on! Search Results for Query: 1964 SMS Kennedy | Coin Talk
While I help members when I can, I feel you should do some research and find the information for yourself. It would stick with you longer than having us do your work for you. Sorry, a little grumpy today and sore all over from my trip off the mountain.
The little hanging teardrop from the 4 in the date is one of the diagnostics of the SMS Kennedy, but it also appears on a variety of other non SMS 1964 Kennedy's.
Yes. Thanks I could be holding either I suppose due to lack of knowledge. Yes it does have a tiny upside down tear drop hanging but it is on the left corner also the back is doubled so I’m thinking it’s just a possible ddo/ddr
The backstory of the 1964SMS is that all of the pieces were found in the estate of a former mint director. The pieces were sold to a prominent dealer in the late 80s and shortly thereafter, they were graded and certified by ANACS. Over the years, many have been crossed over to other TPG holders. As far as I know, no 64SMS have every been found by the public (if anybody has a link to one found in circulation, please post it). What's the best way to tell if you have a 64SMS? Look at the label on the slab This is the stuff that the YouTube hacks never tell you. Many of them just want clicks, and don't care if you waste your time searching for something impossible to find. Just keep clicking on their videos. BTW: There is some controversy regarding these coins. Some knowledgeable numismatic researchers feel that these are not SMS prototypes, but only early die strikes (I lean towards this explanation). There are no mint records or personal documentation from the mint director indicating the circumstances under which these coins were minted. All we have is the opinion of some prominent dealers in the late 80s. Conflict of interest? Who knows? But, for now, they are still categorized as SMS.
Hey Mountain Man, did you walk, run, ski, snowboard, drive, or actually trip off the mountain. Ho-Ho-Home Rudolph, I'd be sore too! Be safe up there in God's Country. Merry Christmas to all...
Which JFK's are anomalies, which are issues, and which are errors. When it's hard to decide SMS (Special Mint Set) to the rescue. Oldhoopster said it best, in my opinion. Good luck.
