    Hi,

I'm not entirely sure, so maybe someone else could confirm this, but it could be a late die state dime. As the die deteriorates, it can cause some distortion of the fields and elements, and that might be what is happening here.

Those are the lines created by die abrasion also called die polishing. It is a normal part of the process as a die is being prepared. Die abrasion is also used to remove marks on the dies created when dies clash.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Thanks for the information. Is it a common type of coin?

    Thanks.

I’d agree with foundinrolls that the marks are the result of deliberate die polishing at the mint. The file marks in this case are all in one direction and are only seen in the fields. The areas of relief are not affected. Die polishing is routinely done to used-dies when the die has excessive flow lines or dies that have been clashed. I don't think the coin is very valuable but I would certainly keep it as one excellent example of die polishing.

I think the coin shows the effects of intentional die abrasion, although the raised lines are unusually coarse and show an uncommon consistency in direction. I also think there are die flow lines from die deterioration mixed in with them.

    Hi,

In exemple, if you look with zoom, there are some metal accumulation. Some dimes have couple of lines like that but not on the entire surface. The other side seem to be OK. I never saw that before but i'm not an expert.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

What is the extra metal under D of United? Look like an extra part of flame...

Do you think it is a good idea to send this coin for professional evaluation or not?

    Thanks.

That little squigly line coming off the olive branch towards the D in UNITED looks like it could be the remnants of a die clash. Looks like it lines up with his nose on the obverse and maybe was the reason for the polishing. Just guessing.

    Hi Zzyzzyth,

Maybe it is a die clash... it's a good idea.

    Thanks.
