I will answer that question with one of the first threads I started after joining Cointalk. http://www.cointalk.com/t39837/
Sometimes none sometimes more than I care to admit... for one toned Peace $ I paid about 8x grey sheet compared to a non-toned example. For the most part I am comfortable with paying up to 2x grey for a non-toned example. But it depends on series as well as what year of the series. I can tell you that toned 1922,23,24 and to some extent 25 Peace $ are more common that a 1927 or 27-S. I would pay nicely for a rainbow toned 27 or 27-S in MS grades...
Why thank you I understand the complications some coins more rare than others The ones I am going to sell have rainbow toning and are all natural I got 2 morgans 1 walker (Amazing toning) 2 silver washington quarters 1 clad eisenhower and 1 Susan B. Anthony (Observe is stunningly gorgeous, reserve is a little too dark and splotchy but still has deep colors) Plus dozens of 1960's era nickels from mint sets None are common dates, all in grade AU and above Albeit theyre all natural. So i was thinking for the silver morgans 10x melt value For the walker 20x melt value for the quarters 10x melt value Not considering there numismatic values I say there in great shop. I have another mrogan thats baby blue from its case an 1879 P nothign special but ive decided to see how it progresses toning...
I would be interested in these coins... if you have pictures please let me know I will send you my email address...
How much of a premium will I pay for toned coins? Not a cent more if it was untoned. I struggle trying to understand how anyone can come up with a self imposed premium for a coin, based on toning, and other people can agree and respect it. How do you guage it? Don't get me wrong, I like the look of a toned coin, and I don't turn my nose up at them. If mine tone up, thats a bonus, if I buy one that I like that happens to be toned, thats a bonus too, but I like them just as much if they are not.
Sometimes I have to laugh at the term "toned" as used by some e-bay sellers. Often it is nice word for corroded.
