So I went to my first coin show and it was kind of interesting. The show was here in Phoenix Arizona and it had about 35 different vendors selling everything from New Coins (2021 Morgans) Old Stamps, Old trinkets like arrowheads (weird), and a dealer that sell coins while the wife sells handmade bags. But I bought several coins and here are the results of my treasure hunt! The first one is a Mercury Dime Full Band 1942 P. The second one is also a Mercury Dime Full Band 1941 D Both cost me $30 for the pair. The last one is an 1883 O Morgan Dollar that I bought for $100. I found that the coins a cheaper at the coins show than if I buy the coins from a dealer. The next coin show is in Mid-January...can't wait!
Nice pickups! Dealers have less overhead at shows, and more competition, so you tend to get better pricing. Call 800-CoinShowAddiction if you need help
Could be the photos, but have you done the magnet, weight, diameter, etc. on the Morgan. Looks odd in the photo. Also, the 1942 Mercury doesn't appear to be FB. The middle band is the one TPG look at first as it gets the most wear. Your's appears to be worn enough the line no longer shows.
I believe you way overpaid, the mercs don't look FB.Other two merc pictures shows some staining so they might of been cleaned/doctored.The morgan has been cleaned and AT'd might be xf details and worth around melt. The mercs maybe up to $5 each but no more and the 1883 O is a very common date for $100 is a high MS quality example.
The Morgan is clearly artificially toned and looks to be a circulated coin. I don't know as much about the Mercs but I think you overpaid for them. You may want to step back from purchasing raw coins for a while and learn about assessing coin surfaces and grading. Get a copy of forum member Jason Poe's book, "The Art and Science of Grading Coins" and really study it. Ask lots of questions here on the forum, the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask. We would like to help you build a collection you can be proud of. I made a lot of regrettable purchasing decisions early on, and thanks to the help of the collecting community I started making better choices, but I'm still learning. Enjoy the journey!
Jason’s book really is excellent. I wish I had read it earlier in my collecting journey as it might have saved me from some bad purchases.
What everyone else said is on point. You've got about $25 worth of coins there that you significantly overpaid for. Some advice, stick to reputable dealers, you may pay a little more but you will actually get what you paid for.
Good thing we no longer have fasces on our coins! They might induce heart attacks in the Current Year. Congrats on your purchases. The Mercury dimes are beautiful and the Morgan is quite dramatic.
I have to agree the coins were all “messed with” and would not get straight grades. I’d not buy any coins from this particular dealer again.
Yeah same the 1941 and 1942 mercs I can get for $2.50 each in BU to MS64 around me. There are dealers with huge jars full of them. Unless you have an MS65 FSB or better it's just junk silver for those dates.
