Hello CT friends, it’s the end of the year and it’s time to briefly summarize this year’s results in this wonderful hobby. I have bought small number of coins this year, and I tried to add some coins to my several subfields. So, these are the coins I chose for the top 10: #1 Caesar coins are constantly very popular and expensive, so limited with my budget, I managed to buy this piece, which is a bit porous, but legend is visible and all the elements. At this moment, I am satisfied with him. Julius Caesar (49-48 BC). Denarius. Mint moving with Caesar. Obv: CAESAR. Elephant trampling serpent to right. Rev: Priestly implements: culullus, aspergillum, ax, with wolf's head at the top, and apex. Crawford 443/1. Weight: 3.46 g. Diameter: 16 mm. #2 I don't have a lot of bronzes from the first century, so I added this dupondius of Vespasian with nice portrait and common reverse. If someone who knows Flavian coins much better than me, can evaluate this dupondius if there are any traces of a tooling. Vespasian (69-79). Dupondius (Orichalcum). Rome. Obv: IMPCAESVESPAVGPMTPCOSVCENS. Radiate head of Vespasian to right. Rev: FELICITAS PVBLICA / S – C. Felicitas standing facing, her head turned to left, holding caduceus in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left. RIC 554. Weight: 11.4 g. Diameter: 27 mm. #3 Also, I started to add sestertii for as many emperors and their wives as possible. Due to the limited budget, I choose lower quality sestertii for scarcer emperors. Lucilla (164-182). AE sestertius. Rome. Obv: LVCILLA AVGVSTA. Draped bust right. Rev: CERES, S-C. Ceres, holding torch and grain ears, seated right on cista mystica from which a serpent emerges. RIC 1728. Weight: 22.1 g. Diameter: 30 mm. #4 I bought a few denarii and I constantly try to add as many interesting reverses as possible. I didn’t have a denarius with the Consecratio reverse, so I added this Pius with pyre on reverse. Divus Antoninus Pius (138-161). AR denarius. Rome. Obv. DIVVS ANTONINVS, bare head of Antoninus Pius right. Rev: CONSECRATIO. Four tiered ustrinum (or pyre) - the lowest most of which represents a plain podium with three small festoons, two large festoons, and the profile of a festoon at each end; the next tier forms the sepulchral chamber for the reception of the deceased, in the center is a pair of paneled folding doors, flanked by two niches on each side with statues and surmounted by a cornice; the tier above has three niches with statues and a cornice; and the upper forms a lofty plain attic with hanging drapery in front, a lit torch flanks each end of the upper tier, which forms a pedestal surmounted by the quadriga of the deceased; all the tiers diminish in width from the base upwards so as to assume a pyramidal form. RIC 436. Weight: 2.7 g. Diameter: 18 mm. #5 I want a denarius with a throne on the reverse so I bought this one. Diva Faustina Senior (138-140/1). AR denarius. Rome. Obv: DIVA-FAVSTINA. Draped bust of Diva Faustina Senior right, seen from front, hair elaborately waved in several loops around head, braided, drawn up and coiled on top. Rev: AVGVSTA. Throne on which is a wreath, transverse scepter leaning across front. RIC 377. Weight: 3.4 g. Diameter: 17 mm. #6 I didn’t have a decent denarius of Crispina so I added this piece. As far as I can tell, the reverse is not common. Crispina (178-182). AR Denarius. Rome. Obv: CRISPINA AVGVSTA. Draped bust right. Rev: VENVS FELIX. Venus seated left, holding Victory and scepter. RIC 288. Weight: 3 g. Diameter: 17 mm. #7 Also, I wanted Domna's denarius with PIA FELIX in the legend, and I chose the reverse with Venus and Cupid. Julia Domna (193-217). Denarius. Rome. Obv: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG. Diademed and draped bust of Julia Domna to right. Rev: VENVS GENETRIX. Venus seated left, holding apple in her right hand and scepter in her left; at her feet, cupid standing front, legs crossed, resting his right hand on her right knee. RIC 389b. Weight: 3.2 g. Diameter: 18 mm. #8 As for the antoniniani, I added a few to the collection, but I chose this Tacitus for the top 10. Well centered, with full silvering and with beautiful details. Tacitus (275-276). BI antoninianus. Ticinum. Obv: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Tacitus right, seen from front. Rev: SALVS PVBLICA. Salus standing facing, head right, feeding serpent in right hand; T in exergue. RIC 162. RIC online 3417. Weight: 3.1 g. Diameter: 21 mm. #9 I wasn’t happy with the Vetranio bronzes I had, so I bought this one with a green patina and nice details. The historic reverse legend, 'In this sign you will be the victor', confirms Constantine's vision before his victory over Maxentius in AD 312 and provides proof of Vetranio's loyalty. Vetranio (350). Centenionalis (Bronze). Siscia. Obv: D N VETRANIO P F AVG. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Vetranio to right, behind neck. Rev: HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS / A / ASIS*. Vetranio, in military attire, standing facing, head to left, holding labarum with Christogram with his right hand and spear in his left, being crowned with wreath by Victory standing behind him, holding palm. RIC 279. Weight: 4.9 g. Diameter: 23 mm #10 I am building a small collection of coins minted in Viminacium. I added this Hostilian with a scarce reverse where Moesia holds a cornucopia. Hostilian. (250-251). AE 28. Moesia Superior. Viminacium. Obv: C VAI HOST M QVINTVS CAE. Bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: PMSC OLVIM / AN XII. Moesia standing facing, head left, in her left arm she is holding a cornucopia and she holds her right hand over a lion. Varbanov 202. Weight: 12.5 g. Please share any relevant coins, post your comments and name your favorites! I wish you good health and many beautiful coins in 2022.
Nice coins, @gogili1977. Thanks for sharing. I like your Lucilla and Julia Domna. The latter has a very nice reverse design.
Great group! I LOVE that Julia Domna denarius, wonderful portrait. My two other favorites are the Vespasian bronze and the A Pius consecration denarius.
