Here's another interesting variant I picked up recently. I have a similar type already but this one has a better ram. But it is different too. The wreath configuration is 4-6 ratio and I can't get over the ΑVΩ. If this is Severus Alex then this would be a new type. If not I would easily attribute this to McAlee791(a). Some extra eyes and opinions, please!
OK. I found the reverse in McAlee Supplemental No. 2 855D But the obverse is a laureate head, not rediate. But still your thoughts?
The omega clenches the deal for me. The engraver intended it to be for Elagabalus; there is no omega in Severus Alexander. I interpret it as a blundered ANTΩNЄINOC legend.
Interesting. I didn't think about an error. It's already a pretty rare coin to start with so there is not much material to compare it.
Nice and rare coin, but where did you find it? This Halloween patina (orange and black) is curious. The obv. legend is slightly blundered. "ΑVΩ" must be "AVAN..." and the whole legend AVT KAI M AV AN[...], likely AN[TWNINOC]. Thus, Elagabalus (rather than Caracalla).
Yeah, the "desert patina"! Red clay converted to sand over the millennium. That would fit with the geography. But we also know that desert patina can be applied. In this case, I feel it is original. I think the picture is a bit over-exposed causing the Halloween orange color. I picked the coin up on one of the online auctions. I bid on 5 and only won 3. Sometimes I'm too cheap! But I am one coin away from a complete ram series for Elagabalus. I'm missing 792(A) at this point. To date, I haven't been able to find an example of this specific coin- so it is going into my collection as "unpublished".
