I just got this slabbed 1998-S matte finish coin. It is the last coin that I needed for my first complete Kennedy set. It was advertised as slightly toned. It is just starting to tone around the edges of the obverse. I doubt it was slabbed this way but I really don't know. So, my question is; Will this "toning" likely continue? I intended to buy one for my coin book and not a slabbed one anyway, so I was considering *gulp* opening the slabbed. Is there anyway to arrest this change in the metal or am I better off just leaving it in the slab? You can't really see the toning in the pictures below but more where it is located. What do ya think?

I honestly don't know how expensive that coin could be, I apologize in advance if it is quite expensive.

You might want to replace that coin slab if that toning bothers you. What do you think you can do if you remove the coin from the slab? Afterall, toning is nothing more than a reaction with the air atmosphere and the coin itself. To slow down the process means that all you need to do is to severely reduce the level of atmosphere around the coin.

P.S. Never place any coin slab in a warm, humid enviroment as well.

You can buy them on ebay for about 260 dollars. I got this for slightly less money because of the toning. I wonder if the toning is a result of the matte finish? It probably isn't as uniform as the toning you normally see on a sliver plated clad coin. It seems to be creeping in from the rim. I have toned clad Kennedys that tone all over rather from the edge. This seem different somehow.

You can have the coin crossed over with ICG into an Intercept Shield holder - that should stop the toning. Or you can remove the coin and place it into an Intercept Shield holder yourself.

Other than that - you can try leaving it as is & keeping the slab stored properly, that may or may not stop the toning.
