Sometimes I buy a coin even though I don't exactly know what it is. The coin below is such a coin. I paid some 8 euros for the little mystery. Of course, it is not a complete mystery. It is an East Roman (Byzantine) coin of Justinian I. Still I have not been able to find this exact type: Obv.: DN IVS... NIANS Rev.: VIC TOR Measurements: 3.25g, 14mm What is the denomination - a pentanummi? What is the mint - is it Constantinople or was the coin minted in Italy?
Here’s a listing from acseach that may be helpful for the following coin. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2114574 JUSTINIAN I (527-565). Pentanummium Chersonnesos. Obv: D N IVSTINIANVS. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: VICTOR. Emperor standing facing, holding long cross and globe. Sear 197A. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 2.33 g. Diameter: 13 mm.
Thanks a lot. Yes, I found a few more now on acsearch. I had hoped that it was an Italian mint issue (the reason why I bought it). Cherson was almost at the oposite side of the Empire. Nevertheless, its an interesting coin and the acsearch entries suggest that it was super cheap at 8 euros. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6920347 https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6539668 https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=8392662
