I actually really like rattlesnake, and have had it in the States many times, turtle soup is good...sometimes gamey. I have had snake, and snake blood with wine on Snake Alley in Taipei - back in the late 80's and early 90's. My wife took me to the Santa Monica Airport Restaurant several years ago, that specialized in very exotic dishes. They had menu sections divided by those exotic dishes. She decided we were going to have the Insect section. Of the 12 Dishes they had at the time, I had already tried 8 of them in my travels. So we ate the other 4 dishes to try them. I was surprised she was willing to taste them, and she actually finished one of the dishes. I especially remember the Scorpions on a toast...very good. The Ants with a crumble were a bit formic/acetic, and not as appealing.
Durian Fruit is the only >BLEECH< for me. Had it in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manilla... would try it, but never liked the taste of used cat litter!
That is one of my favorite dishes in the Guangdong Province! I get it every meal I can. The cheeks are a delicacy!
I raised sheep and cattle growing up...so have tried every delicacy of sheep, pig, cattle, etc. Yeah, even Kentucky Oysters, etc... Just don't forget, most nations use EVERY part of slaughtered animals... we all call it Brats, Sausage, Hot Dogs, Soup, Sweet Meats, etc. etc. etc. LOL, where do you think the lips and anus go in the slaughtering? What is funny, is that all the dishes we think are ODD to us, are actually eaten very regularly in various parts of the world. It is THEIR everyday or frequent food delicacies! It is all perspective... France make wonderful Horse dishes. My favorite dish growing up that my Mother would make for my Birthday was Gizzards and Persimmon Pudding for dessert. I cannot get enough of them!
I have eaten pig's brains, cattle hooves, sheep's eyes, goats' ears, rodent droppings and whatever else fell into the mixing vats of Eastern Pennsylvania makers of whatever scrapple is made from. Delicious when fried in thin strips. But, like legislation, best not viewed being made.
Frogs' legs are a traditional dish around my place. Families have their sunday lunch in restaurants that serve them on a regular basis. I like them, but it's not the thing I would want for lunch every week, it's a lot of butter for little meat. A white chardonnay is the wine to have with them though ! Q
