Back again with yet more GB coins Ive had a load of various date GB brass threepenny bits for a while which were already in a plastic file holder, Im having a clear out and removed a few theres about 40 of them all with different distinctive marks, My question are any of the following errors if so would you be so kind as to tell me what the error is please Im not looking for the easy route here just a few pointers for reference before I have another look through the lot? your assistance is greatly appreciated in advance 1 2 3 4 5 6 Ignore this 1 uploaded in error and I cant delete it 6 7 8 9
As mentioned, they are laminations, which are very common on this series - it seems that they never quite managed to get the brass alloy properly mixed. Collectors in the UK consider laminations on the brass 3d series a defect, and will only pay 1/2 or so what they would for a 'normal' example.
@norantyki @paddyman98 Yes true the UK IMHO frustratingly doesnt have the same view of the value of error coins in general whereas the US holds these coins in high esteem. I did some research and the majority of these Brass 3D seem to have been produced at the York mint which was having issues during the 2nd world war, the mint for the first time employed a lot of women to work at the Mint and the building also got bombed I suppose its possible that this had an impact on the quality or minting process ( just for the record the bombing & not the female employees ) cheers for the reply
Cheers Evan My thoughts exactly - nice ones, they were all in an A4 plastic folder that Ive had for years and you couldnt see the defects until I removed a few having a clear out !! so it was a nice surprise sorting through them and taking pics
