Don't get your hopes up. They usually don't have much in the cases as far as coins go. The typical modern junk that people got rid of, but thats usually the extent of it. A guy from a local coin shop buys a lot of pawn shop stuff and I suspect whatever they get in goes to him. I won't name that place because it's the biggest rip off in Vegas. You're better off throwing money in a slot.

    Thanks for the heads-up

Guy - thanks for the heads up! I'll go there with an open mind and be sure to save some of my money for the Black Jack table!

Turned out the coin was fake, but the sunken treasure coins in the first episode tonight was awesome.

Dang! I missed it, so how did they determine it was a fake? Did they have to call in an expert or did Chumley figure it out? :D

It was an added mint mark, they called in an expert, and he said he could see solder around the mm.

I hate to break it to you guys, but this show and others like it are set ups. These shows are staged to recreate "reality" TV. Or as one station calls it....actuallity. I have never seen this show, but if it is anything like that Repo show, then it is all staged. Just watch the fine print as it rolls by in the credits....its all in there. I used to watch that repo show every now and again with my wife, but what did it for me is when these guys went into the hood to repo a car and got into a fist fight with a Mexican or Puerto Rican gang. I couldn't tell if I was watching a real fist fight or WWE smack down. I didn't know which was more fake. I haven't watched it since. I suppose crazy things do happen in the pawn world, but I would suspect that most is created for the show. I think Jerry and Maury are calling and they want their customers back.

I'm sure that wasn't much of a shocker to anyone on CT. I would have liked to see it just the same as you really gotta search TV for coin segments. If anyone knows Brad Pitt or his wife see if they will make a movie about coins. :goofer:

Exactly! Pawn shops serve a legitimate purpose for the truly desperate to liquidate whatever immediately. Pawn shops are known in the financial world for paying the absolute lowest price.

I think that one may be an advertising setup. Something did not seem right. The guy came in said he wanted to sell and it had been in auction before, but had not made the reserve. Then seemed like that was his lowest price. Did a little google search and the "expert" Rick knew came in to verify the VOC ship bell a while back is partners with the guy who came in with the clump of coins. If you go to their website you can see the clump there. And the VOC ship bell for sale. Along with a as seen on Pawn Stars.

Like someone said earlier, it's probably staged reality. Another flaw is, what seller would rely on the buyer's expert?

One thing also I wonder if or how much the customers get paid. I am sure they would be signing a release form. Some of the shots are made as they walk thru the door. So either they were screened outside or screened inside then walked out and back to make an entrance.

A $20 St Gaudens is listed as being on a new episode tomorrow :)

Wonder if it will turn out fake like the quarter was.

Wasn't the pawn business the first form of credit in the united states? Maybe someone can refresh my memory but didnt the US break out of the great depression patially because of pawn credit and a very large gold loan from J.P Morgan...?

    $20 St. Gaudens

The 1924 $20 St. Gaudens was authentic and graded at MS-64. Rick gave the owner $1000 for it. She found it in a wall safe in a house that she was bought and was renovating.

I thought he paid more for it... I remember thinking she got a pretty fair shake... but it was late and I was tired.

Most full episodes are up on the Pawn Starts YouTube channel, this one is too recent and may still be airing on TV. Check back in a while to see when they upload that episode.

A depression yes, but not the great depression. It was the Panic of 1893 that developed into a depression and the gold loan was made in 1895. The panic was the result of the 1890 Sherman Silver Purchase Act that greatly increase the purchase of silver that was made into Morgan dollars. The Act created a new currency series, Treasury notes of 1890 also known as Coin notes, that were used to make the purchases. The unlike silver certificates though these notes could be redeemed in either silver or gold at the holders option. Since silver prices were depressed it was possible to sell silver and then redeem the notes in gold and have more money than you started with. So the silver produced flloded the government with silver and depleted the gold reserves to the point where the government was in serious danger of having to default on their financial obligations payable in gold. The uncertainty that the government might have to default lead to uncertainty, runs on the banks, bank failures, loans being called in, and massive business failures. And oddly enough, the free silver movement, and gold silver debates, Bryan running for President, the "Cross of Gold" speech, Bryan Money, and the official adoption of the gold standard.

These guys know the mundane details about an old clock from the 19th century and they needed to call in an expert to notice the added MM? I would think that it would be very hard to make a convincing mm that small. I'm surprised they didn't catch that themselves.

I doubt experts are called in when the cameras are off.

Did get to see American Pickers the other night. I was a little more impressed with it than I thought I would be. The guys seemed more knowledgeable on certain subjects than I had expected. It did show them get thrown off people's property and a trip that was a dud. It was more realistic than I thought it would be. I was surprised they can make a living doing this. You would think you would run out of worthwhile places to check out over the years.

It's coming on in 8 minutes here. I plan on watching it again. Somebody said another local guy is on the show. Have to see what he's selling.
